I'm creating a very low budget server network in my dorm at MIT and need (AS CHEAPLY AS POSSIBLE):

3x Athlon 64. I don't care what speed, an XP 3000+ is fine.
3x Motherboards for above A64's
3x1GB DDR, though 3x(2x512) is probably better

I have 1 case + PSU, so I also need:

2xold case
2x400W PSU (each will be running 6 hard drives so I want to be on the safe side).

To put this in perspective, we've got little money and want to build a file server that can also be used for processing some simulations. I decided the easiest was setting up 3 servers, each with a main hard drive on which windows will run and 5 hard drives in RAID 5 where 4 are usable. Assuming 200GB/ hard drive, that's 800GB/ server node of space. 2.4TB right now should be enough. I'm writing a service in C++ on the server side that manages the files and downloads/uploads. Client will have a C# interface that uses C++ DLL's to keep track of the file system so the network looks like a single hard drive. Users can then access files and run tasks. This is for educational purposes, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks:)

That's a bit pricey, and in all honesty, I don't need hardware that powerful. The whole reason I'm using 3 systems is because I can efficently split up the work load. To put things in perspective, I am considering using plain old Athlons as they would most likely suffice.

Would you be interested in the Athlon 64 FX-55's? I have 3 of them for sale, looking for $250 each or if you were to buy all 3 then the price would be $650

You understand 750x4 = 3Tb with no redundency and by itself would cost 1600$ or thereabouts.

I'm gotten several replies from people, thank you, but I fear I may not have been precise in the pricing. As we are on a limited budget, I'm looking to spend around 45$ for the CPU, so anything very powerful I'm sure you guys wouldn't be willing to let go for that much.
