Canon i860 Colors Suddenly Out of Whack

I have the Canon i860, which has been working fine. Then, when it
came time to replace the Cyan cartridge, I put in an "alternate brand"
cartridge, namely one from Staples. The colors were immediately off
-- blues came purple. I did a color test, and while red and yellow
printed fine, and cyan seemed okay, pure blue definitely came out
purple, and magenta came out reddish.

So, went to the store, and purchased a genuine Canon cartridge for
Cyan -- only the colors remain skewed the same as before! I tried
running the head cleaning routines, thinking maybe the Staples
cartridge had gummed up the Cyan head, but that hasn't helped. (Is
there even a separate head for each color?) I even tried adjusting
the colors using the driver software, to maximize Cyan usage. That
gets me a slightly better hue, but blue is still more purple than
blue.

Can anyone explain what the problem might be, and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

I finally resolved this with a call to Canon. See my separate
posting, subject: Canon Printer Cartridges -- Be Sure To Get The
Right Ones!
