I don't know... you wouldn't get the better SM3.0 support in the 6800 SLI config than the 7600GT.... I think in terms of being able to support SM3.0, the 7600GT would beat the 6800 in Oblivion... thankfully i don't have to worry about this because i have the X1900XT, and with a shader-heavy game like Oblivion, I think it should really shine... that and the 7900GTX...
these two setups are in the same price range, has anyone made a comparison?? how would it stack up in Oblivion?
I too do not know for sure but SLI is not a very good idea... you get +30% performance maybe for 2x the price.
A single 7600GT ( $189 ) or 7900GT ( $299 ) would be better
I would recommend the 7900GT if you can afford it, otherwise the 7600GT -- both are shader 3.0 cards.
Both cards are faster, better, cheaper, consume less power and generate less heat so your electric bill should go down with the new cards compared to the older 6800s either in single or SLI configuration.
Since both of those are using 4x FSAA, when it is likely this person will be using 2x FSAA, or no FSAA likely at 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 960/1024 resolutions.
Most people I know don't enjoy an average of 22 fps, let alone 18 fps.
Of course with 4x FSAA at 1280 x 1024 - 1600 x 1200 the better GPU is going to make more difference than the video memory throughput (The 6800 GT/GS has +42% more video memory throughput at its disposal, it is quite amazing that the GeForce 7600 GT beats it with only 22.4 GB/sec available to it).
Why play at under 60fps (average, so could dip under 30fps often) with 4x FSAA when you can play at 2x FSAA or with no FSAA at a far higher speed ?
So yeah, the GeForce 7600 GT is better than I expected, and makes far better use of video memory 'bandwidth' than I expected too.
