I've had this issue with two computers, using the same recycled sound card, an Audigy 2 basic. My old computer was an Athlon XP1600+, while the computer I built for myself this weekend is the following:

Athlon64 X2 3800+
Abit KN8 SLi
Samsung SH-M552C DVD-RW
Hitachi 7K80 SATA II
XFX Geforce 6800GS (factory OCed) PCI-e x16
1GB Corsair PC3200
Some kind of Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers from 3 years ago THG recommended
XP home (32bit) SP2


The advisors/characters seems to stutter, sometimes even repeating themselves, every so often. Same with the music.

I would like to know if anyone has experienced the same thing in either in Rome:Total War or another game and if and how you solved the issue. Would a direct connection (4-pin cable) from the CD/DVD drive to the sound card be of any use?

try setting the affinity for the game to only 1 processor. My friend had problems with GTA 3 with video stuttering problems. Dont remember if their was audio problems or not. Set the affinity to one cpu and it worked perfect.

if that doesnt help, Try a different pci slot. Dont use the one next to the graphics card. some motherboards use the same irq for the pci 1 and the video slot.

Thanks. I already have the card in the furthest PCI slot away from my graphics card, so I'll try fiddling with the settings.
