32 bit programson 64 bit processor

Hello,
I just formatted my computer and after completion of my install of Windows 8 I noticed that i installed the 32-bit version. my machine has a 64 bit processor. i have tried to install the 64 bit version but its giving an error message. is it possible to move from 32- bit to 64- bit using the same activation key

    As far as I know, XP 32 and 64 bit use different keys, but that changed as far back as Vista, so using the same key works
