As always with these questions, you will get opinions that run a complete
spectrum of preferences, complaints, positives and negatives.
What I usually do is add them all up, then average them out to get a general
consensus.
:)
My experience with Dell wasn't all that good. The computers (I bought twice
from them ) ran all right generally, but their vaunted tech support was
absolutely the worst I've seen in the entire industry since I got into
computers, and I've dealt with a few.
For me, Hypersonic was the answer. The company is first rate, the hardware
works as advertised and even better I would say, and when I need tech
support, which isn't often with their system, and has never been because
something went down, I can talk to the English speaking person who actually
made my system and knows me by my first name when I call.
I really don't want to sit here and trash Dell......well; not much
anyway.....and if you buy a Dell, you might just have a better experience
than I did, and I'm sure there are good things to say about Dell as many
people own them and do just fine, but FWIW, I personally would not use Dell
again, and am VERY satisfied with my top of the line Hypersonic gaming
system.
If you decide to check out Hypersonic, call 1 800 520 0498, extension 816,
ask for Alex, and tell him I said hello.

Their Tech non-support is beyond awful. I just bought a 8400 a couple
of months ago and went though Hell getting it to run correctly. There
Tech support was absolutely no help at all. I spent over 40 hours on
hold with them in a period of a couple of weeks....... Do yourself a
big favor and have someone build you a gaming machine.

I've had a XPS for over two years (3GHz, 1GB ram, 9800 126MB, etc.), runs
like a charm, BUT - I've never had to call tech support. I was disappointed
it didn't have a gameport and had to get a USB adapter to keep using my then
two year old $595 PFC gameport yoke (but at diminished capabilities for
switch functions :(, and a few other minor problems, but overall it's been a
great machine. I've always 'rolled my own', but Dell offered the same
componets I would have hand picked, all put together, with the 'new' XP OS,
for less than I could have put it together.... Plus at the time they had a
special, double memory, free shipping, etc... so I got it, and haven't been
sorry.. Maybe later, if I try to upgrade and hit some problems, but by then
I'll probably be looking at a whole new box when FS-2006 arrives, let
everyone else evaluate it, and pop for new stuff in 2007..... d:->))

I have used Dells for years and have never had problems with them or
their tech support. But also note that with the XPS gaming systems that
they have a separate tech support line for them and that might be better
than what the others have said concerning their exp. with dell tech
support.

I'll have to chime in here regarding Dell. I have both a Dell laptop and
desktop. I'll admit, both systems have crashed once, but overall I like
the machines. I have had a mixed experience with Dell customer support,
but overall it was good. At this point, Dell is still my first choice
among the majors choices. Previously, going back a few years, I had a
Gateway. It may have changed, but their tech support was awful. I'll
never buy from them again.

Yes , the reason I recommend Dell is that I have never ever had to call
their support :)

Ding Ding... I have bought the last 2 computers from Gateway and have
needed their tech support once with a bad hard drive. If you discount
trying to explain the problem to a person with an Indian accent, the
support was ok. Actually I finally started feeding what was wrong to
the tech girl and put the words in her mouth to send a new hard drive.
My 200G hard drive was bad, they replaced it with a 250G drive.
