How much cheaper (if at all) can you get the GeForce 6800 GS for ?

It doesn't perform the same, but is is close enough in many things, esp if only using 2x FSAA or no FSAA at 1280 x 1024.

The only other card 'on par' with the GeForce 7600 GT is the Radeon X1800 GTO, which has a 256 bit memory bus and 512 bit ring bus memory controller (vs the 128 bit memory of the GeForce 7600 GT).

You'd need to go over a few benchmarks, and compare prices, but I suspect the GeForce 7600 GT is in a league of its own at that price point.

An x850xt is better you are thinking of a x850 pro, my xt will run CS:Source with super eye candy, meaning everything on highest settings and i still get 60fps, so i dont know what you are talking about , the 7600 is crap, anything close would be a X1600 but those also suck. o and its set at 1280 by 1024, its still damn good, Mmmmmmmmmmmm! eyecandy 8O

Actually the Radeon X1800 GTO and GeForce 7600 GT are on par.

The Radeon X1600 Pro was to 'counter' the GeForce 6600 GT, albeit very late, and needlessly (the X700 Pro did a well enough job).

Would the Radeon X1800 GTO outperform the X850 XT ?, Might be closer than you think if you're only getting 60fps or so in HL2 / Source games. I'd still say the 16 pipeline X850 XT would beat it though.

2,967 points in 3DMark '06 isn't too bad, and it scales nicely with FSAA enabled. Crossfire X1800 GTO is not such a bad idea either. (For the price / performance you get).

There is nothing that gives 7600 GT performance at less than the 7600 GT price... it's simply the best card under $200.
Every other card under the 7600 GT's price will perform at least 15% worse.

The X850 XT would beat it, but I haven't seen any of them that low lately.

I just started buying parts for my new comp.

Seagate 250hd
Therm8000 ATX full case
Generic DVD/CD-RW
and a Asus MB (single card pci-express)

I had a hard time choosing my video card. So i decided to wait on the second part of my process. (processor, vid card, ram)....

Thing is. I just can't decide over the 7600gt or X850xt

With that said, i've heard the Radeon is better, but it has no pixel shader 3.0.

Can anyone help me out here with how badly Pixel shader is needed?

Keep in mind i'm a mmorpg player. EQ2,EQ1, WoW and soon to be a few new upcoming mmorpgs.

I'm willing to step up and wait for a 7900gt, but, for half the price with the x850xt's performance it doesnt seem worth the 300$. I don't know enough about pixel shader 3.0 to make a fair and accurate decision.

What should i go with for primarly mmorpg gaming? Anyone have any suggestions, ive been left really high and dry here....

That in mind, go for the X850 XT.

MMOs are usually coded for the lowest common denominator. I don't even think WoW uses any SM2.0 effects.

EQ2 might use some SM 2.0 stuff.

Long story short, MMOs are better served with high resolution and lots of AA, and the X850 XT will do that better than a 7600 GT.

Better than the 7600GT for LESS money? Not quite sure there. Technically, on a raw performance basis, the X850XT would manage the job, though for newer games, it wouldn't quite work so. The 6800GS might be another candidate, though its core is seriously weaker, in spite of having more memory bandwidth.
an X850XT from sapphir eon newegg is only 160 the crossfire edition in like 300 bucks

so yah which is better X850XT? or 7600GT?
It depends on the purpose. I suspect that when it comes to shaders, the 7600GT may pull a slight lead. However, it does have a lower fill-rate due to having only 12 pixel shaders, texture units, and raster pipelines. It also has less memory bandwidth; its RAM runs at an admirable 1400MHz, but because it suffers from a 128-bit memory interface, it's like an X800/X850 card with only 700MHz memory; the total bandwidth comes out to 22.4GB/sec either way, worse than on the X850XT.

That in mind, go for the X850 XT.

To concur, if playing an MMORPG, the latest tech matters little; you just want as much memory bandwidth as possible. And it's hard to beat the 34.5GB/sec of bandwidth that the X850XT gets.

In the under $200 market, the 7600GT cannot be touched.
However ... just like the 6800GS, if you are willing to wait 45 days you will see a sweet price drop on the 7600GT.

6800GS PCI-e opened at $250, was $200 within a week, and I bought it 90 days out from its introduction for $154.
