Internet Problems

We have local network and we tried to connect to internet.We have DSL so we buy router.At first 3 computers was connected to directly to router and everything was fine.It worked for about 2 months.Suddenly router begun disconnecting internet.it was ok for about 10 min then connection broke down and restore.That was happening all day long.So we bought switch to make things a little easier(We made server) and we couldn't started it.Can any1 help me.Please tell how to build network.what cabel to use(normal and crossover and between which components) and which ports in switch,router(uplink or normal)

If it worked fine for 2 months then suddenly started acting up, I would be asking "what was the last thing I did before it went pear shaped?".
