Ok, I need to design/build the cheapest computer possible (with monitor included) for just word processing and web surfing. The thing will only be used with dialup.
Floppy Drive
Cdrom drive
Verrry basic. I dont know much about the low end of computers.. so I ask for advice. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. I dont know how cheap this can possibly be (300 or less?) but who knows. You dont even have to worry about upgradability.
I would just buy a cheap E-machine system. The price of Windows XP is more for retail than OEM, so having it preloaded on a system is the cheapest way to go. E-machines may not have much room for upgrade, but in my experience the hardware is pretty stable. If you must get one now or withen the next few weeks I'd try for a Sempron CPU system as it currently beats the performance of Celerons in the same price range.
Don't go Dell, their 90-day warrenty is no good. A $300 HP or Compaq will work too. I never recommend them except in your circumstances. Your biggest problem is that you will need to buy a floppy drive separate from the system. Customizing a system with a brand name will add mega bucks to the price, so don't get an HP to come with a FDD. If possible avoid the drive altogether. If not--go to Walmart, Office Depot or whatever and get a cheap one.
Don't bother with dell unless you need a good warrenty. Otherwise you will only be disappointed.
