Current specs
CPU: Athlon XP 3000+
MOBO: Chaintech Socket A
RAM: 2x512mb PC3200
GPU: GeForce 6600GT AGP

I'm waiting on the AM2 & Conroe to be released, and I was going to prepare my system and buy parts other than mobo, cpu,& ram.

But now with Vista (might have to buy new monitor), and new stuff with GPUs, I've decided to keep my system and just change the mobo & cpu till then.

I'm gonna be getting the Epox 9NDA3+ board, and wondering which CPU to get I was eyeing the 3700+ 64, and wondering if thats the best bet for me. Think 3200+ would be better cause its cheaper, b/c this system will be toasted soon?

I will be OCing and its mainly for games.

Was thinking of dual-core, but with my current GPU, i'd have to upgrade it and I'll be getting a high-end GPU when AM2 and Conroe are out, so there's no point.

There is no particualar reason to wait for AM2, the only big change is DDR2-667 memory which only provides modest perfomance gains. Conroe finally catches Intel up to AMD in terms of performance.

If you are looking for a S939 CPU that is good for overclocking get the Opteron 165. Great for overclocking, 2MB cache (2x 1MB) and a server grade CPU. Its $325 at newegg and worhh it. It is dual core also.

Vista has been delayed until January, don't worry about that for a while.

Yah thats a good call with the Opteron 165, I was thinking of that before.

And now it makes sense to just get a nice Opteron 165 system with a new GPU. It'll cost more than my other upgrade but will last me longer and be way better.

Done and done
Thanks

IMO, I think that AM2 systems WILL NOT be that much faster. At most, I believe they will be 5-8% higher than they are now. You might as well get a Mobo and CPU now, get a DFI with SLI-Enabled (For future upgrades), and get an Opteron and OC the hell out of it.

I agree with steveo, but just wait until the 65nm AMDs come out...can you say mid 3ghz! But, I don't think you need an SLI mobo because you can buy single cards which are better than dual solutions. Opty probably is a good choice.

opty 165 is a good choice. along with a pci-express card.

Yah about the AM2, I want to wait until they come out with the 65nm. So I'm just gonna get the...

Opteron 165
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D
GeForce 7900GT (maybe an ATI tho, gotta research it more)
2GB of some value RAM OCZ, Corsair, etc.
