OK, I am going to build a new computer soon, and am using a semi-old (2003?) monitor. I pressed the menu button on it and it said "800x600" in the upper left hand corner of the menu. Is this the maximum resolution of the monitor? Will I be unable to play games with a higher resolution then that? Please respond...I need help.
Most likely that is the current resolution you are running. Visit display properties in Windows and if the driver for your monitor is install the max resolution on the monitor will be the max the slider will go on the Advanced Tab. (Eg. if you monitor supports 1600x1200 thats the highest the slider will let you go for resolution)
That's the resolution your running at right now. Try messing around with the resolution by right-clicking on the desktop, and then clicking Properties. Once you've done that, a menu will pop up. Click the right-most tab and it should be Video or something like that. Just change the resolution and voila, it should change. Oh, and I think you should still be able to play games at higher-resolutions, like 1024x768.
