Total Before Shipping= 765
After Shipping= 800 or so

Only 700 range because my parents agreed to pay 700$ for an ibook(instore discount, but that fell through)...so i figured "i need to learn how to oc and get all that down, plus a better rig than this old 2.53ghz p4 POS)"

This computer is just to get me going with OC'ing (around 700 total and can push this processor to 3.0ghz by reports)
This computer only has to last until Septmeber-Christmas because i turn 16 in september(cash for birthday+getting a job, and christmas=cash and money from working) i can build a new up to date pc and let this act as a server in my spare room (brother is going to college in maryland so i have a 3 bedroom apartment to myself)

All help and recommendations are well appreciated, going to drop the suggestion tomorrow for this rig, so hopefully it can be here by mid next week :)

ps--make decisions fast because a few deals end soon :D

I would steer clear of the refurb MB. You get ONLY the board, and it's pot luck as to why it was refurbed. Retail on that board isn't much less than the kn8 sli that I just used. It's SLI and from the forums I've read oc'in up to 330 is possible (haven't started testing yet myself)...the 250 limit was corrected with a bios revision. Passive cooling also...hate when those chipset fans burn out....

But if you don't like that one.....still I reccomend retail over OEM....especially for the MB.

recommend a nice cheap mobo with at least 2 SATA II port's then :)

shoot <50 for the heatsink (keep it under 8 total), was looking at

I like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813127225

I haven't started OCing yet but I've read good things....it's SLI and it's 10 bucks more than the retail version of the one yer lookin at.

Also you might want to add some arctic silver 5 (just sucks what they charge for shipping on that dinky little tube)

You are unlikely going to reach 3.0 GHz on that CPU before destroying something if you've never overclocked before.

:!: The Socket 939 AMD Opteron will usually reach 2.5 GHz without issues if you are skilled, a lucky few will get to 2.7 - 2.8, and with very expensive / advanced cooling 3.0 GHz to 3.7 GHz.

You might have been 'slighty' mis-informed.

Good point Tab....

I was looking at the budget side of the post....missed the part about wanting to hit 3gig.....that would be $$$

Reply to oenomel

i don't care if i hit 3.0, just saying that it was possible, i would love to gain the skill from learning to overclock this so that i COULD oc to 3.0 on a diff rig.

just switched mobo to epox and picked a zalman hsf.

I think you should get the Freezer Pro 64 from Artic cooling you had earlier. I heard from many others that it is a great cooler. Go for it!

Good luck overclocking ;)

Reply to unbiased4u

upgraded mobo to ultra (4 sataII's)
changed HSF to an arctic 64
changed psu to an antec truepower
