I have an opty 165, a coolermaster aquagate mini r120 (which for some reason my proc does 38 when idle) and an asus a8n32 sli board. My ram is gigaram mach1000 ddr500. To get to 2.8 i need dividerss. I ve tried setting it to 166 and it doesnt boot. Yes my htt is at 3x, multi is 9x and htt is at 300. But it wont boot. Help please.

uhh, what is your voltage? My 165 needs 1.45 volts to do 2.8ghz.

chances are it wont reach 2.8ghz - its the luck of the draw, dont expect miracles.

What was the highest that you had it stable?

Reply to oenomel

I think that the newer optys arent as solid as the old batch. I only could get mine to 2.4 stable. :( i will work with it more later when i get more time......but good luck

let us know how high you can get it stable

Reply to pinkpantherx

My point was we don't know where he was at when it got flakey? Did he go from stock to 2.8? That isn't very smart....

2.8ghz is the highest I tried (315x9=2835), 24hour stable with dual prime95 and 1.45volts. You need a DFI mobo to get your fsb that high no other board that I know of can hit 300+fsb stable.

I meant the original poster.....sounds like he took it out of the box, put it together and went for 2.8.......ya know that's a bad idea! But that's how I read it.....

Set it to 133. If that boots then it's your RAM. Loosen timings and/or increase memory voltage, or accept your RAM can't go that quick and settle for a lower overclock, or just stick with the 133 divider

If you need more explanation than that then you shouldn't be trying this until you've researched more.

I run a 2/3 divider on my ocz 2gig set, so I can run @ 2-2-2-5 @422ddr. You really dont need to oc your memory on a a64/opteron setup, because of the on cpu memory controler(vs the old p4 and athlon xp and lower with the northbridge setup).

Hey, you don't really need to oc the CPU, most of the time...

I think this would be better phrased as: "The Athlon 64 architecture doesn't suffer the same performance penalty when running memory with a divider, compared to the older Athlon XP line."

Faster RAM will always be of help, but it's not quite such a huge impact as it once was if you're forced to run asynch.

meh, just being picky .

My opty 165 only went to 260 (2340) stable. Even higher voltages wouldn't coax it to do 270 let alone 300.

I have since backed it down to 250 which lets me run my ram at a better divider (and cl2). that with 4x HT gives me slightly better 3dmark scores.

My understanding is that the dual cores are easier to damage with high voltages, so be careful.

BTW, I am running RightMark to back off multiplier and voltages and keep it nice and cool even though it's overclocked.

Thank you everyone. And no, i didnt just go from stock to 2.5, i slowly rose to get there.

stay under 1.55volts with a cpu fan, and watch your temps on the core. Stay under 50c full load (amd says stay under 60c) and your good. I dont really think 200-300mhz is a big difference after you hit 2.2ghz, but when you get to 2.6 or 2.8 you will notice faster performace (and if you multitask you will really see a difference).

I have water cooler cooler master aquagate mini. 1.39v 279x9=2.5 stable, but i think i need to adjust the sitting of the cooler, because right now it idles at 40C which i think is too hot for idle with water. But i may be able to get it to 2.6 with 1.435v.

Chances are you've never used an Opty, it's the luck of the draw. Don't expect miracles (like you actually knowing anything about computers =/).

@Topic: I can reach FSB 290 w/ 1.328v on DFI LanParty nF4 Expert w/ Opty 165, I recently bought it and I would surmise you should be able to get it higher. My idle temps are as low as 18c (Thermaltake Tower w/ 2 Vantec Tornado's) and less than 30c full. Your WaterCooling setup sucks, water is a waste anyways, grab a nice Heatsink and some Tornado's.

My Opty 165 is @ 2.7 (300x9) @ 1.4v.

blah im happy with my 3500 doing 2420 mhz

had it up to 2692 mhz but on stock cooling its not worth the risk ** there are 5 fans 2 pulling in air 3 pushing out **

be happy with what OC you get, if your not happy feel free to buy the Processor that matches the OC you wanted.

I'm happy with my P4 doing 3200MHz, which is the stock speed.

Good advice. I wanted to double the speed of my old P4 1.6GHz Williamette core. So I got a whole new computer :)

now now fanboy, and you say you know more bout em? you didnt even know dual channel came to the AthlonXP (chipset wise, and not all that impressive) and your an AMD fanboy!

At 40 C idle you want 2.8 GHz ?

Try 10 C idle, that might work.

Some Opterons will only reach 2.35 GHz before giving up, others 2.5 - 2.6 GHz. Overclocking a lower end Opteron to 2.7 GHz is asking for problems, as you no doubt have noticed. :P

I just got an opteron 165 a few days ago. I've been bringing it up slowly and it's running 2.6 GHz (289x9) at 1.31 V. My temps are a bit high though, 50 C at full load with an XP-90.

Woah, that's a bit bad. I have mine @ 290x9 @ 1.4v and I am 22c Idle and 30c Load, I have the Thermaltake Tower w/ 2 Vantec Tornado 92mm though.
