On Wednesday I've got to go and look at a Canon S600 printer which
is not printing in black - it will print the first line or so of
the page then fizzle out. Colour is OK, and the head cleaning
options in the software has been tried. Can anyone suggest what I
should look for- I am guessing it needs a new print head or maybe
just cleaning? If I do need to buy a print head, where would be
good places to get them in the UK? (As I may need to order one in
a bit of a hurry...) Many thanks.

Neil Slade has a large website with more information than you really
need, but if you have time to read it, will be informative:

Ok thanks,

I have now got to the printer and established it is certainly the
print head, because if I wipe it with a damp cloth or soak it, the
printout improves, but I cannot completely correct it by this method.

It is looking like I will need to buy a new printhead - but the
question is where from?? A simple Google search for "Canon
QY6-0034" helped me find <http://www.tonik.co.uk>, who are selling
them for £59.95 (including VAT and delivery) - which looks like
the cheapest, but does anyone know if there is anywhere better?

Or would it be better in the long run to buy a new printer??
(Bearing in mind I have 2 sets of new cartridges for this one and
the new Canons use a different type of cartridge..)

Many thanks once again.

My reason for suggesting Neil's site is that he has solutions for more
desperate clogging than standard ... very likely you don't need a new
head. Many people don't want to bother with technical solutions; they
prefer to spend the money for a "quick fix." If that's you, I won't
bother you further; but check it out. Try "The MIRACLE AIR CLEANING
CURE for CLOGGED PRINT HEADS" on
http://www.neilslade.com/Papers/inkjetstuff3.html. He also has a
boiling cure that a reader attests to but he has not tried.

He also offers advice on a daily print regimen that he claims will give
you more reliable printing and save ink in the long run. Check it out.
