I currently have an eVGA 7800GTX 256mb card and would like to upgrade to either an ATi 1900XTX or nVidia 7900GTX, but I've read about some concerns over high temperatures on the 1900XTX. Please post your temps (and your system configs if you'd like) on either card. Currently, my temps are ~40C idle max 72C load.

I've hear that the 1900XTX is also pretty loud at times, but this is not a major inconvenience for me.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the 1900XTX, but instead the 1900XT and just overclock a bit and you would have yourself an XTX. Buying an XTX isn't worth the extra 50-100 dollars. Just buy an XT and overclock it like 25-50mhz and you will have youself an XTX.

But if your considering both those cards, I would get an a 1900, because the 7xxx series can't run HDR and AA on games at the same time while the 1900 can. Also the 1900 outperforms the 7900GTX in most games.

I would not consider upgradeing a 7800GTX since it is good enough to hold you till the next round of cards come out in a few more months.
I want at minimum better than a double performance increase for a $500 splurge.

Hm... well, I was going to wait at least until mid-April, but maybe I'll hold out a bit longer. I've held out this long because I thought that my AMD 3500+ would bottleneck at anything greater than my current 7800GTX, until I read the boost that the X1900 cards give with AA. I just got Oblivion and thought that the X1900 would allow me to run HDR and AA (with reduced framerates, of course) simutaneously, but then I've read where even the ATi cards can't run both at once. On top of which, the ReadMe file insists that any X1000 ATi card will need a driver update.

Considering the "slow" speed of my CPU (2.2ghz), is the 7900GTX or the X1900XT (good advice btw, of not getting the X1900XTX) even worth considering?

Speed isn't the most important factor for me. I hear that the new ATi X1900 cards handle AA as well or better than the nVidia 7900's. Since I'm not running a dual-card mobo (my 3500 CPU will bottleneck in dual-card with these cards), I'm not partial to either brand.

After your suggestions, I'm leaning toward the X1900XT, hoping that it'll run a tad cooler than the X1900XTX. IMO, 90C temps are a bit too hot, though my case should have enough airflow to bring the temps down a bit.

Ok, I own 7800 GTX's and just paid $82 to upgrade both to 7900GTX's via Evga step it up program, that was worth it. Replacing a 7800GTX with another $500 card? Personaly I dont think its worth it at all. You are the judge of your finances, not us, but from a performance stand point you will see little bang for the buck. My advices is wait for the G80 and R600 if you really want ot upgrade. They are a good 3-4 months away but should be a nice step forward.
