Hi,
My old palm Vx died! poor little fella ...
Anyway, Im considering moving to the dell x30 624mhz or the Palm T3.
i'm leaning to the dell since its windows but im not certain how
exactly pocketPC works ...
In my old palm i had to convert every file i copied to the palm, i was
hoping that with a pocketPC i would be able to just use standard
windows fat without the need to convert mp3's and avi's , as well as
other formats like docs, pdf's and html folders (ebooks). I was also
hoping to use the SD card with a card reader instead of coping through
the cradle only... (i can put a reader in my bag and use it for storage
as well as in the dell)
is that true or does pocketPC needs to convert as well...?
the palm (t3) has in its advantage list a bigger screen with more
resolution but slower cpu... i was hoping someone could give me tips as
to why one is better/more recommanded then the other and for what
purposes (pocketPC VS palm).
most important, can someone direct me to a site that explains whats
better in each system ? (so i could find whats more appropriate for me?)

You will find that while the PPC will still convert files like docs and
excel worksheets to pocket versions, may things like mp3's, avi's, do not
need to be converted. if you are looking for a well rounded "multi-media"
experience then PPc's beat palms hands down. while the built in windows
media player is limited in formats it will play, there are a number of good
quality freeware players that will play many (if not most) music and video
formats. a card reader is a great way to go and works great for
transferring files back and forth,

Thanks for the reply.
btw - do you find that watching video is possible on the PPC ? if so -
what kind of video ? the screen is pretty low resolution and cards
usualy pretty small (although when probably converting to 320x240
resolution before transfering will reduce size immensley).
what kind of multi-media do you run on your ppc ? (just curious)
thanks

Standard (supplied battery) about 6h with the screen on 5 minute
auto-shutoff, and the CPU in power saving mode (about 200mhz).
The larger battery which sticks out a bit is good for about 4-6h of
video (screen on at about 50% brightness) which I've used for a plane
flight over the atlantic.
Cheers - Neil

Incidentally, there is very little that has to be converted for the PPC. You
can find PPC applications that read darn near anything. The built in Word
and Excel read native .doc and .xls files, though they can be converted to
Pocket versions reduce their size a bit. That's not really necessary anymore
with the size of memory going up, and the price coming down. You can
definitely use the card reader to transfer everything.
There are numerous options for compressing video to fit on available media.
Getting it down to 320x240 or 640x480 is part of the process. A very viable
Matrix at 320x240 can be compressed down to 260M or lower. 4 hours of music
will fit in 256M when ripped at 128Kbps in wma. With 512M SD cards under
$50, you can make a nice little media machine.
