Hi:
I put together a system in 2000, so by today's standards it's pretty out of date, but it is not for gaming, so not originally for heavy load applications..
But.... lately I have been using it sometimes to transcode video, and windows has locked up. It turns out to be most likely a CPU temperature issue.
When this occurs, CPU temp is approaching 60C. I have replaced the cpu heatsink/fan and a front case fan (10cm pulling air in) and this problem has gotten better, but still occasionlly gets me.
While Idleing, Asus probe 2 reports CPU 51C, the motherboard 38C and I know that room is 20C.
I am wondering where to apply my efforts to fix this, case cooling or cpu cooling? Something else?
Am I right at looking at temperature?
Athlon 800 (not overclocked)
ASUS A7V MB
mid tower case
Windows XP Pro SP2
Sounds like the ambient air around the CPU is not escaping too well, perhaps the PS can't handle the exhaust?
One way to tell is to leave the case open and put one of those room oscillating fans near it (not in it) and blow directly in (a.k.a lan party cooling mod). That should cool things down and if you don't get lockups then a possible fix may be a case exhaust fan that is usually directly under the power supply (if a mount exists there).
Maybe you will still get lockups with the temp lowered, and your power supply is suspect?
