So I replaced them both. Now suddenly my CPU is overheating. The heatsink fan still seems to be running fine, my CPU just climbs in temp. until the emergency shut off kicks in. It's really irritating.

Is there another solution to this other than replace the current HSF?

What I don't get is that it's still spinning fine, yet the thing is overheating....

Hmmm...

Pull the HSF, clean it, put on new thermal paste, and check your voltage settings for the CPU.

I'm sure some others will have other tips as well.

Good Luck,

If you haven't moved the HSF during the repair, there's no reason it should stop working properly - the grease etc ought to be all alright, but there's no harm in cleaning it up and putting some fresh grease on.

First thing I'd do is check the voltage going to the CPU, i believe it should be ~1.65V for the 2800 - any higher than this and the core will heat up more than normal.

Cleaning it worked...

Maybe I bumped it and it created an air pocket in the old thermal paste?

I dunno.

Either way, it works now. =D

Those stock Athlon xp coolers suckass... I had stability issues when it would get over 30c room temp during the summber. I got a nice aftermarket with an adapter for a 120mm silverstone... Havnt had a single problem with heat. It never reaches past 46c with a 300mhz OC on a 2400+.
