New Battery Help Needed

I recently replaced the battery in my iPaq 3955. I was prepared to lose
everything and rebuild from scratch. I was surprised to see my Windows
Mobile 2003 upgrade wasn't lost.

Now I'm wondering what else was preserved. Do I need to reinstall the
service pack upgrades (drivers, rom, etc.) or are they still in there?

Obviously, my programs need to be reinstalled. I'm unclear as to what is
stored in "permanent" memory and what was lost with the battery upgrade.

thanks in advance for your help

Your 3955 now looks just like it did after applying the Mobile 2003 upgrade.
That upgrade replaced everything that was in ROM by writing a new image to
that ROM. That's why it was all retained. If you did any RAM patches after
that, those need to be redone, and of course installed apps, re-sync, etc.
If there was a subsequent ROM update, that once again took you to an
out-of-the-box experience, that would not need to be redone, as it too would
have been a ROM update.
