Those who would like to answer your question can't accurately answer you
truthfully for various legitimate reasons. Those who will answer this
question usually don't know the answer. It goes with the territory. :-)
I can tell you that gauge quality is being addressed already by several
third party developers; notably from my personal experience Realair and
Cloud 9, and what they are achieving in FS9 is absolutely remarkable.

Then it's time to lobby Congress to change the law; What do you simmers !!
It's for the good of all desk pilots.

Yes I have, but I don't believe you should have to pay for addons to
get excellent gauges like that. Microsoft can definitely do better in
that regard.

Download the X-Plane demo. Take off and look at the fluidity of the
instrumentation. The difference is stark. The X-Plane gauges move
like you would expect a real gauge to move.

I'm usually looking out the window, with an occasional glance of the gauges
(panels usually squished down to the lower 1/3), so if they want to jump
once in awhile, feel free, but I've never noticed either........

I dont' think you understand. Have you EVER compared the gauges in
X-Plane to those in FS2004? There is no comparison. The gauges in
FS2004 are incremental and only update their positions 3 or 4
times/second. The X-Plane gauges update in real time and are as fluid
as you would expect from a real gauge. I just don't see why Microsoft
can't get theirs looking as good. Perhaps it's the emphasis on
scenery above all else?

You'd notice if you ever flew IFR. Or if you ever bothered to
compare.

Well if you think about it.. generating and refresh of the entire
scene 30 times per second would seem a BIG task to perform.
Ok.. so maybe you want the flightdeck and VC "very real" and can
run it at night w/o lots of outdoor views. How about sliders for this?
As for "smoking" -- if its' night conditions.. does the Sim still
generate all the terrain peaks (mesh) and apply bitmaps?
Even if it does.. you could still cut the terrain sliders.
Conclusion -- that mean an new slider? "target gauge refresh rate"

Well, ok... I did check what you are saying and yes FS9 gauges do move in
increments. But, they move in little tiny increments and quick enough that
I've never even noticed that they did that.
I do not doubt that X-Plane gauges are as smooth as you say, but in actually
practice you are the first person to bring it up in my 3 or so years of
monitoring this newsgroup. It's sorta just not a problem for anybody else.

That would be an excellent idea. It could allow you to assign
priority to either the avionics or scenery where maintaining frames is
concerned.

Is it not a problem, or have people simply not noticed it? I ask
because I truly wonder. I think if MS could (and I'm sure they can)
make their gauges as smooth, nobody would be happy with how they work
now. It's just that overall I like FS9 better than X-Plane, but I've
kinda gotten spoiled on the quality of the XP gauges and wonder why
Microsoft can't seem to get theirs working as well. Right now I use
FS9 for VFR and heavy metal flying and XP for IFR flying. If MS had
their avionics to the same standard, I'd just delete XP and save a
couple gigs on my harddrive.
But seriously, Dallas, give the XP demo a spin and you'll quickly see
what I mean.

As mentioned earlier its worth having a look at RealAir's Spitfire and SF260
(latest version). The gauges are supper fluid and that is in VC mode. They
are at least as fluid as XPlane's or Elite's gauges. Of course the only
problem is that for the moment only these two aircraft utilise this
technology, though I'm secretly hoping that RealAir will update their Scout
aircraft too...

They're good, but not more fluid than XP. XP's gauges can't be made
any more fluid. Maybe it's my mediocre system (Athlon XP 2600) but I
found the Realair gauges to be very good, but just a bit short of XP.
Still, they're good planes, which leads me to wonder even more why
Microsoft can't match the quality of Realair.
