Do Opterons require ECC RAM???

I want to buy a cheap cpu mainly for gaming. I came across the Opteron 146 at a good price, but I think somewhere I have read that they require ECC memory. Is this true or bull? I would like to overclock it to make it faster for gaming, especially Battlefield 2 and Fear.

Socket 940 Opterons require ECC Memory (Those are Opteron's that start with a 2 or 8 ). Socket 939 use regular RAM and can be put in almost any Motherboard of Socket 939. Socket 939 CAN use ECC, but it is not recommended unless necessary by Server use or something of the like.

Thanks for the clarification Mad Mod Mike!! Yeah, I was looking at the Opteron 146 vs. the 3200+ venice. Of course, these are socket 939 so I can just get the regular ram which I believe is cheaper. Sweet!!!

There are 1xx series of socket 940 Opterons as well....(although you are correct, all 2xx/8xx series are obviously socket 940)

(Although I think some 940 mainboards were made to utilize normal DDR non-ECC/non registered DRAM...

Link me to these Socket 940 1xx Opteron 64's, I want to see them. I know in the past there was, but I didn't think there really was now.
