I'm reading all these people saying that a LOCKED unit is locked for
life and useless if you are not signing up with an specific provider.
(Vonage is the famous one)
Is this true?

AFAIK, yes. However you can bribe the company to unlocked it... IIRC,
Vonage charges $15 or so.
