LED with sound

(Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place)
Is there a way to hook up LED or cold cathode lighting to the sound card? My friend did it to the subwoofer in his car. I know its cheesy, I just think it would be fun.

you need an external device that would plug inline with the audio output. My dad had one back in the 70's for his, dare I say, "disco lights".
Not sure what there called.

Well there are sound sensitive cold cathodes you can buy that just need power. Put them next to the speaker and watch it jiggle.
