I've tried hooking a second monitor and all during the boot process, both
work fine. While loading windows it seems to work okay. When the windows
login screen pops up, that's it...off it goes. The monitor is working, it
says it's not getting video signal. I went into the settings and it had
automatically detected the second monitor. Can't find anything to change
that would make a difference. I even set the resolution and refresh rates
the same. Rebooted after each change I made. The monitor is fairly old
but....

Check that you have activated the 2nd monitor.
Right click on desktop, then properties-settings.You should see 2 monitors
but one is greyed out.Check the box "extend windows onto this monitor" (or
something like that)
Also check if you have the Nvidia software installed and if so,you may have
to enable the 2nd monitor. On mine the options are
single display (1 monitor)
Horizontal span (1 desktop covering both monitors side by side)
Vertical span (as above but vertical)
Clone (identical displays)
and dual view (2 seperate displays)

I used to have this prob. Ensue that all Nvidia software was installed, then
after booting if the 2nd monitor is not on, turn it off and back on, that
sometimes brings it back. (ensure of course that it is activated)
