New card to be bought soon... just wondering:

Is the 7900GT better than the7800GTX? I mean, it's newer and has a better core... but why is it cheaper? is it the 512 / 256mb GDDR difference?

Also, can someone post the standard clock speeds for them, every brand seems to be different :?

Cheers.

Xan

Considering the following...
X1800XT 256MB is $280 and can be clocked to 690/1600
X1800XT 512MB is $330 and can be clocked to 690/1600
X1900XT 512MB is $430 and can be clocked to 690/1600

And these are widely available, any of these would be better performing/price ratios...

because the new 7900 chip is cheaper to manufacture.

Not to mention that often the top end cards are artificialy inflated in price.

It`s No True ... 7800GTX 512Mb Can Beat 7900GT 256Mb in Almost Every Test ... Go See Some Benchmark ... The 7900GT Is Stronger Than 7800GTX 256Mb But Not 7800GTX 512Mb ... About ATI ... 7800GTX 512Mb Can Beat X1800XT 512Mb In Almost Every Test ... But X1900XTX Is Better Than 7900GTX 512Mb ...

I Didn`t Say OverClocking Is A Bad Thing ( Like I Always Said : Stuck Is For Suckers !) ... I Said That We Should Compare 2 Graphic Card On Their Stock Clock Freq ... We Cant Say We Should Buy A Lower Card & OC It To A High End Card !

The 7900GT has awesome oc capabilities:
800Mhz on the core and 1063 on the memory....that's an 80% oc.

I don't agree with PX7800GT, I think the OC capability of a card makes a big difference on the price/performance ratio.

But, from the quote above, you have to realize that that is overvolting the GPU from 1.2v to 1.7! and you have to have surgeons hands to solder those SMD's. The conductive paint method can get you 1.55V with no soldering, and that will get you right around 700 on the core.

I didnot realise that the higher voltage was obtained by hardware alterations...just using the powerstrip software program which has a lot more gimmicks than the standard nvidia software.
But still, it is a nice oc. OC capabilities are high on my list when considering the hardware. But what do I know, I am just a noob.
