my opteron 175 reads 41c in my BIOS. my understanding is that this is ok. i had hoped it would idle at a lower temp. i dont know exactly what it runs at under load, because i am not sure of a good prog to monitor this with. any suggestions? nvidia ntune came with my mobo, but when i run it it locks up my computer. any ideas why?

Try speedfan.

Maybe you got a corrupt ntune installation or installer - DL from nVidia to see if that fixes it.

Mike.

My Opty 165 @ 2.6Ghz w/ stock voltage is about 21c idle, something is definately wrong. I also experience issues with Speedfan and others, but when Speedfan goes to get info from my motherboard, it shuts my system off instantly. Where did you find a Dual-Core Opty patch? I didn't realize it was available for the Opties..than again, I run XP x64 and I think it's for XP Pro only.

You mean your CPU overclocked runs at 21C (69.8F)?!? That must be a chilled water cooler or peltier, right?
Heck, I don't keep my A/C in house that friggin low... so that would be impossible for most people to achieve... When room temperature would be warmer...
Does your CPU actually cool off from room temperature (ambient) when your PC is powered on?

the driver im talkin about is off the amd website and its called "AMD Opteron™ Processor PowerNow! Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2" there is also one for xp64 but i havent gotten a copy of that yet. hearing that ur at 21c makes me furthemore upset. i just read something about my cpu coming with a thermal pad. if it did i didnt realize this. i just smeared a little artic silver on there and popped the stock hsf in. im gonna take it off and check for this supposed thermal pad.

It runs @ 21c Idle because room temp is near there, I also have a Thermaltake Tower w/ 2 Vantec 92mm's. I don't use water because Water is cheating.

I think the PowerNow driver is to lower down the Multiplier when you don´t use all the power of the CPU...

To keep your room under 69F is chilly... and costly... (needing it that cold in your house, I see why you are so staunchly against Precotts)
I keep my A/C around 75F to 76F, or so... regardless to run current through it, seems like it would rise at minimum a few degrees above room temp... So you keep it like 66F in your place???

People normal body temps is 37C. High fever can bring the 40-41C temp, and not kill them..

What about getting somthing better to worry about?

The best program for monitoring CPU and fan temperatures (even hard disk temperatures) is SpeedFan. Check it out here.
