I basically want feedback on the compatibility. Will my WD Raptor even be compatible with my MB? What are the requirements for SATA150 exactly? How does everything else look? I know the video card is relatively weak for the overall system, but I plan to just buy another 7600 in the future to SLI it. Thanks again!!
If i have the setup this way, will the harddrives technically be set like master-slave, or whats the deal? i havent dealt much with computer since my old one setting it up in IDE master-slave mode etc. Thanks!
For some reason the link didn't work for me - but I'll try to answer the questions in general terms:
Your SATA150 Raptor will work fine on a mobo with SATA300.
Unlike IDE (Master/Slave), on SATA everything's a 'master', so there's no jumper settings to connect 2 drives - each drive gets its own SATA port on the mobo.
Will a SATA300 drive work on a mobo with SATA150 as well (without fuss)?
thanks!
Mostly what Baracuda73 said. There are a couple mobos with issues on certain drives but those are handled with a SATA150/SATA300 jumper on the drive, if memory serves. (and they are really rare issues)
1. Case -- I don't like CoolerMaster brand, I would take say Chieftec LBX or LCX series, they have more space and features and are not too expensive but definately have better/sturdier material and finish (antivibration, etc).
2. Mainboard -- if you want good O/C with AMD you get DFI Lanparty Ultra something, not ASUS.
3. CPU -- You could save some money by getting 2x 3800+, or even better, get Opteron 165. Also check if it is possible to buy tray version instead of boxed CPU because you won't need stock HSF anyway since you have decided to get aftermarket cooler.
4. Cooler -- Forget 7000 and get 9500 if you can, it is a lot better. It has bigger fan (92mm) so it pushes more air at same RPM making it quieter.
5. HDD -- instead of 74GB raptor and 2500JS I would get WD4000YR if I were you. 74GB Raptor is old tech, doesn't have NCQ but TCQ and WD4000YR gives roughly the same space for less money and it comes with 5yr warranty and much higher sustained speed than 2500JS, You can always save some money for new 150GB Raptor later and keep WD4000YR as a storage drive.
5. PSU - I would get OCZ Modstream or Seasonic but Antec will probably do just fine.
The 74GB raptor is old news?? I thought it was King.
Let me check into the WD4000YR. See how that is any better.
I think the 150 GB Raptor is still the fastest sata drive.
Correct me if I am wrong.
Anybody who would pay $300 for a 150 gb drive is retarded. You pay so much damn money per gb in Raptor's the price just isn't worth it. What you should do is RAID0 2 36gb Raptor's
