So yeah, I have 1 gig of memory, (2x 512) and I'm thinking of upgrading, I'm just checking to see if it's problematic to add a 1 gig stick? So I'd have 2 sticks of 512 and one stick of 1 gig. I don't see why this would be a problem, but I just want to make sure. Thanks.
I could be wrong but I dont' think so. I think he will see less performance than if he just had two sticks that were 1 gb apiece. DDR needs to have a perfect pair to be really effective plus he won't be able to do dual channel either.
You really need to check the documentation for your motherboard. I know from experience that there are more than a few MB's out there that do not support 3 dimms in any configuration. Besides, 2x512 kits are cheap now.
Note: I'm making the assumption that this is a DDR board with 4 slots. Maybe when you ask a tech help question in the future you can actually give a shred of information to work with.
I agree, dual channel will not be in play with a 3rd stick. Depending on the motherboard, you might be better off with 2 more 512s. I have heard that running 4 sticks on some boards will drop pc3200 to pc2700 speeds, but I'm not certain if that is fixable with new bios. I'm sure somebody out there can fill in that blank.
Good luck

I didn't mean dual channel wouldn't work, I meant that some boards simply will not boot with 3 dimms. 1, 2, 4 are your only choices.
And i'm not sure about 4 sticks dropping the speed (It doesn't on my K8NXP-SLI), but as far as I know there are no boards that will keep 1T with 4 sticks. It will default to 2T. (It's actually due to AMD's mem controller)
Well either way as long as the memory is fast then tight timings won't even be much of a deal with the processor he has right? No matter what it is? I'm sure he would have more anyhow if it was an FX 60 or something right?
Oh, sorry. Didn't realize that the motherboard might matter as to whether or not this could work.
I have an Albatron K8X800, slot 754, three DDR 400 compatable memory slots. If I had four I'd just go for another 2x 512, unfortunately that's not an option.
It says it can support up to 3 gigs of DDR 400 Ram.
