My system:

P4: 3.2GHZ (socket 478)
GPU: FX5900 Ultra - 256MB
RAM: 2GB DDR333 Value RAM
Sound: Audigy 2
Antec 400watt Powersupply

Thank you America for tax refunds! (or should I say damn you!) I spent my wad on an eVGA 7800GS 256-A8-N507.
Core Clock: 430MHz
Memory Speed: 1300MHz

This has been OC'd from the original specs so I should get a slight boost out of that. I can't find any webpage out there that has benchmarked the FX5900 against the 7800GS (I really wish they would benchmark against their earlier series) But anyways I know I'm going to get a performance increase, but just about how much? (I ordered oblivion at the same time with the card, HOORAH!) I play battlefield 2 right now as well.
Resolution: 1024x768
Terrain: Medium
Effects: High
Geomety: High
Texture: High
Lighting: Medium
Dynamic Shadows: Medium
Dynamic: Light: Low
AA: 2x
Texture Filtering: Medium
View Distance: 100%

Right now I get an Average of 30FPS but it can drop pretty low when I get into lots of action. What kind of specs/FPS would I be looking at now, any guesses?

Also as sort of a side note; do you think it would much help if I upgraded to 2GB of DDR400 Low latency ram?

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP!!!!!!!!!

FX5900 Ultra to a 7800GS is a huge jump. I think the 5900 has something like 4 pixel pipelines each sending 2 instructions per clock cycle running at 450 mhz and 850 memory. The 7800 GS has 16 pipes usually runs at 400mhz core and 1200 memory. I'm not sure how many instructions the 7800 pushes per clock but you can be sure its at least 2 or more. That in itself is a huge inprovement. They overclock pretty well too. In addition the 7800gs has 6 vertex pipes and 8 ROP pipes. I cant even find anywhere saying that the 5900ultra has these. Enjoy the card

At least twice the framerates.

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, try to get the Gainward 7800 Gs... it's the only 7800 GS with 20 pipelines, so it performs like a 7800 GT.

All other 7800 GS' have 16 pipelines.

i got the PNY 7800gs (it was 300 at compusa, so no wait for shipping:) ) and i am very happy with it, havnt played bf2 on it... but im sure its max, oblivion is on all high at 1280x1024 with HDR and getting 45+fps... id say ull get a smooth 60+ fps in bf2 on highest settings, especailly at that res. the gainward 7800gs isnt out yet and its rumored to be over 400 bux... thats a lil too much for me, 300 is a bit more reasonable for an agp card (i guess...) it offers excellent perforamnce and overclocks nice, im at 500/1400 idle temps are 43 load is 47

Yah I know about these but they arent tested against the same games.

If you play DX9 games (FarCry or better), the 7800GS will help more than you can imagine. VGA charts don't do justice because there are other factors like being able to play high-res quickly - show full features (heat waves, soft shadows, motion blur, etc)
You need to see the game for the VGA charts to make sense.
If you don't care about high settings, then the FX card might be good enough.

Awesome, I mean I expected some definite improvements, but with all the added direct X 9 features that are spoken of, I'm very excited!

You should be able to play BF2 1600x1200 everything maxed now.
I can with 2gb/ram and a 6800GT. I average about 50fps. Enjoy! :P

the faster memory might make a difference, although the 7800gs will make a much bigger one... if u have spare money after getting the 2 gig of memory might be a good diea, but remeber every1 is switching to ddr2, so once u plan to upgrade again u wont be able to reuse an components

It compares them on Doom3 and 3DMark03......what more do you want?

Wow.....that's an impressive post you've got there, Execept for the fact that you forgot to mention that your system dips into the 20 fps region in much of the game.

My neighbor has the same highly overclocked 7800GS as I do, but with a system faster than yours by far, and I've seen his Oblivion framerates in 1280x1024(his native resolution).

Honesty in ones forum post, goes a long way in terms of respect.

Right now, your in the -minus here.

so waht ur saying is in 95% of the game my fps is above 45 fps and ur saying because u have a friend with a completly different computer and probably differnt settings (i never said it was maxxed, its on higher settings) the only time it dips lower than 45 is in oblivion gates and when theres a lot of spells going on at the same time (the lighting really slows down the computer down) so sorry if i played for about an hour and used fraps to see my frames (monitoring it as i play) and never seeing it dip under 45 other than the other 2 thngs i meantioned. i guess that makes my post invalid, and u seeing him play on a completly different system, for what 5 min? dont say that im wrong when i was watching the framerates. besides in oblivion over 35 is "playable" which over 99% of my gameplay was over 35fps. i forgot to meantion, i sometimes get 999 fps, like when i pick locks

Reply to parlee

I'd reckon you'd see a huge jump in framerates. FX5900 is really old news.
