Hi,

I thought I'd picked a fairly decent card for my new X2-based system in the form of the XFX GEFORCE 6600GT PCI-E 128MB DDR3. However, after reading the "best buys" sticky I'm not so sure. I can get a GAINWARD BLISS GF 7600GT 256MB for just fifty pounds more (UK).

So, couple of questions:
1) How much more performance am I buying for my extra money in the 7600 chipset over the 6600?
2) I was under the impression that extra video RAM didn't do much for performance. Does the extra 128MB in the 7600 card do much?
3) You've got two stickys on the forum. the "short list" recommends the 7600 .. the THG buyers guide doesn't. Why is this?
4) Anyone had any experience with this actual card brand - I've never come across Gainward as a manufacturer?

Cheers in advance for the help and advice.

Answers :
1- At Least A 7600 GT Has A Power Of The 3x6600GT & If You OC It , It Can Get To The 7800GT Performance ...
2- Yes Man , Most Of The New High Graphic Games , NEEDS A Card With 256Mb Ram ... ( Try F.E.A.R. , It Wont Let You Use The High Or Maximum Quality If Your Graphic Card Has 128Mb Ram !)
3- THG Buyers Guide SUCKS ( That`s The Reason )
4- Go With BFG First , I Saw On Some Web Sites That BFG 7600GT Performs Better Than Any Other Brands , If You Dont Like BFG Then Go With eVGA ...
Any Other Questions ?

The 7600 is easily twice the card that a 6600GT is...

More mem alone does'nt really help much, but in the case of the 7600GS, there are higher core/mem speeds, and more pipelines....

Opt for the 7600 variety....

1. Like everyone says, the 7600 GT blows away the 6600 GT.

2. The RAM amount doesn't do much. It's the clockspeeds and architecture that make the 7600 GT so fast, the RAM is just a bonus and will allow you to use larger texture detail in games that support it.

3. Probably because the short list gets updated fairly regularly. Not sure about the buyers guide.

4. I've never bought a gainward, but it has an excellent rep.

i play fear on high quality with my 128Mb geforce 6800, it dosent care. but for maximum i do see alot of slowdowns so you would need atleast 256 for that. id go for the 256Mb just to be future proof because your gonna need it with the new games comming out. Good Luck.

Well, I've had both the XFX 6600gt and the BFG 7600gt CO. I had the 7600gt for a few days and returned it this morning (and ordered an X1800XT 512). I would say you will get about a 50-85% performance increase with the 7600gt.

In a scene I benched from Oblivion, I went from 17fps on the 6600gt to 32 on the 7600gt. I liked the 7600gt, but the thing that made me return it was that it didn't overclock worth a damn. Coolbits said 595/775 (from 580/725). That's one of the great things about the 6600gt IMO.

In 3dmark05 I went from 4100 on my 6600gt oc to 6200 on the 7600gt.

If you can return the 6600, I would say do that and get the 7600. If not, I don't think it is worth simply buying that card if you already have a 6600.

The 7600 GT is quite a bit better then a 6800 Ultra. The only way a 6800 GS would have a chance against it would be with a very succesful overclock (very successful).

It's pointless comparing a crap 6600GT to 7600GT. 7600GT is very good for the money.

I agree that you can;t really compare 6600GT to 7600GT. But saying 6600GT is a crap? Not for the price/performance ratio. Not many people can afford the "extra few bucks" like you can and god knows that it's "worth it".

6600GT is still the king of mid-range for the budget conscious..

If any one is interested in a relatively simple comparison I've run 3DMark '06 on my PC before and after upgrading from an NVidia 6600GT to a 7600GT.

Obviously cards vary, so if you have an older 6600GT with say DDR2 memory you'll likely see more of a leap to the newer cards.

However the link below is a basic comparison you can use as a guide if you're thinking of taking this route when upgrading:

NVidia (AGP) XFX 6600GT vs Leadtek 7600GT (3DMark Scores)

I hope that helps.

How much are you buying the 7600GT for ?

One on overclockers.co.uk for £90 'tis PCI-e btw :)

It is always the case that next-gen cards can offer more performance at only a little higher price.

If you were considering only same-generation cards, the cost to move up to the next plateau of performance is more steep, but in this case, the older card being a GT, means it is already exploiting much of the potential clockspeed that can be squeezed out of the GPU. Such a "GT" model is never the best bang for buck in the value segment, as the next lower grade of same core can usually be o'c to near enough the same speed, what is left is pipes and memory chips.

7600GT is the better value for future games, but 50 pounds is a significant % of the cost of a 6600GT too (at least in the US market), so it's not really a matter of how much more it'll cost but rather, % cost difference and what your total system budget will allow.

well id say the 7600gt.. to tell you the truth is that i havent tried mine out yet (i get it tomorow).. and as u can see i also have an x2 based system, i did my work and came to find out that the 7600gt is pretty much the best card for the money (the x850xt is its competitor in the price/performance).. but i wanted the sm 3.0 and newer technology.. i mean the x850xt came out december 2004 i believe, the 7600gt came out late last year i believe.. so its fairly new.

if u can, get the 7600gt

Ah, you got to him first. But actually IMO the 6800U is not slower than the 7600GT. I'd call them about tie at reference clocks. I'm sure the 7600GT may do better with HDR or under some circumstances, but checking out the digit-life charts, the ever so slightly overclocked 425/1100 (25MHz core OC) 6800U like mine, beats the 7600GT in almost every single game.

Check it out, it would suggest 6800U >= 7600GT:

6600GT still the king of midrange? Unless things are different where you are, you are living in the past. The 6600GT once was king of the budget gamers, now it's a has been when priced with better cards. The 7600GS is cheaper and a little faster than his 6600GT, and far superior cards such as the X850XT have been about equally priced to the 6600GT.

Shoot, looking on newegg the cheapest 7600GT is just $15 more than the cheapest 6600GT. 8O
