Anyone want to gauge pros and cons of a dual Opteron system (1core per cpu) vs an Athlon X2 platform???

Power Requirement (Decent EPS12V vs Mid-Range ATX12V PSU)

Cost may differ:
(Two of the Opteron 200 series models below model 252 are cheaper than the highest end dual-core processors).

You'll need Opteron 200 series to do this btw (Cost rises slightly)

You may require Registered (ECC or Non-ECC) PC3200 DDR-SDRAM for the 2 CPU Socket system (which will be Socket 940 no doubt). (Cost rises slightly again, balances out)

You can upgrade to 2 x dual-core down the track (Like Me - See Sig).

The pros outweigh the cons, assuming you've got the technical know-how to do it, although it isn't all that hard to be honest.

Unless your using it a business server, it wouldn't much sense to me investing so much money into a dual opteron system. The rarity of the boards, using ecc only ram, the cost of 2 proccessors, just wouldn't rationalize for the preformance compared to a dual athlon. or a dual core opteron for that matter. You can still use the ecc ram with a dual core opty, and have a greater selection of motherboards to choose from.

One advatage I will give the 2 opteron system would be larger amounts of ram and greater amounts of sata2 hook ups . You can have upto 8 gigs of ram with certian boards and upto 16 sata2 hookups directly on the board.

Again like the gentlemen before me said, it depends on what your uses are.....
