I would go with

Proccesor
AMD 4400+ $463

motherboard
ASUS A8N-E $92.99

RAM
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) $165

video card
Evga 7900GT $319

Case
I have this case and it is very roomy inside and its very sturdy and quality made

Harddrive
250Gb Western Digital $93

power supply
FSP Group 500W $89.99

DVD burner
NEC $37.99

Windows xp pro $139

Monitor
ViewSonic VA902b Black 19" 8ms LCD Monitor

Total $1723.95 without shipping
and your left with $250 for mouse keyboard and some good speakers

This settup will fly through any thing you through at it. you will be able to play the latest games at highest setting with good framerates.
