Remote screen for laptop viewing

How can I shut my laptop and still be able to view my larger monitor screen to which it is attched?

There should be a function button on the keyboard (Fn) and a turnoff monitor button (a box with a cross inside. So hold Fn and the cross in a box button. You should be able to turn off your screen. To turn on, do the same. That is what my laptop has. I suspect you will have something similar. Secondary functions on a keyboard took time to find and get used to.

Turn off the option to suspend or hibernate the laptop when the lid is closed, in power options.
