Whenever i try and make a IFR flight plan, lets say from gatwick to JFK it
makes some really weird plan that doesnt flight in the right direction etc.
To over come this i make a direct to (GPS) route, however this isnt exactly
realistic.

This is to do with airways over the atlantic not being there or something
along those lines (i remember reading this when playing 2002). How can i
make some realistic flight plans, back and forth?

JFK and florida to/from Gatwick and Heathrow.

or are there downloads for this? (i google searched but no luck)

The first time I planned a High Altitude IFR flight from EHAM to KJFK it
routed me all the way to Alert Bay, Alaska and then to New York.
I hadn't seen the flightmap, but the log showed and ETE of 11 hours.
That's when I knew something wasn't right. :-)

I've been trying to get my hands on old RL flightplans, but getting one is
a matter of being lucky.

I let an add-on flightplanner create the route for me.
FSNav can do this, but FSBuild is a little more precise.
For "regular" airliners I use FSNav. For an airliner with an FMC I use
FSBuild.

Adam,

Here is one generated in FSbuild from EGLL - KJFK. If you past the following
into a text file in notepad and save it as a .PLN file it should work. If
not email me and I'll send it.

Go to the VATSIM UK site http://www.vatsim-uk.org/ and click on Oceanic.
It'll tell you all about NATs and how to plan authentic routes. While
you're at it, join VATSIM!

The Fligh Simulator I use is the Microsoft 2002.

I recently made a transatlantic flight with the Boeing 737.Take-off
from Gander,
Canada at 00:10 *my* local time (Sherbrooke,Quebec).Flew over
Clarenceville airport,Newfoundland,at 00:19,and
St.John,Newfoundland,at 00:29.Arrival over Bantry Bay,Ireland,at
04:20.Landing at Cork,Ireland,at 04:39 (probably 10:39
local time).

When I play with the Microsoft 2002 flight sim,I use a second
computer, with the Atlas Mondial Encarta (1998 Edition) program, which
has on top of relatively precise maps a GPS.I determine my actual
position and plot my course with that program, predicting in advance
where I will end up in the next minutes...or hours. This way,I can
either make a flight plan,or simply change my mind and my final
destination in the middle of a flight.

I have a fairly good and sometimes detailed knowledge of the world`s
geography.
And I actually flew in real life and as a passenger and in real planes
over some the areas I am traveling virtually with the Microsoft Flight
sim 2002.

I use the Microsoft 2002 flight sim mainly to study geography, and for
the illusion of traveling it provides.

You're right, there are no airways, nor is there radar cover for much of the
crossing. As a result, controllers rely on pilots making regular position
reports and using inertial navigation systems (or presumably GPS) to
navigate via certain latitude/longitude points. The tracks, or NATs as they
are known, are designated daily(?) depending on prevailing winds. Generally,
you enter at a designated airway intersection then follow a route of
lat/long points. You request clearance for a particular NAT prior to
starting it and your clearance is only valid for a certain window of time.

One site I found which may be of interest is
http://www.bcavirtual.com/crossing [...] lantic.htm or type "North
Atlantic Track" into Google. There's some good info on the VATSIM website
too, if you look under "oceanic clearance".

Tim,
Is the GPS on the Encarta map a separate program? I use Encarta too but
cannot find a GPS. I would dearly love to do this. Something on these lines
is on my wish list for FS2006.
Any help wd be appreciated.

Quilly,

Unfortunately I have no idea about the Encarta map...that must have been
from the OP.

Sorry!

To my knowledge, the GPS exists only on the 1998 edition of the
Encarta.I have a subsequent edition of the Encarta, but it has no GPS.

When I use the MS Flight sim 2002,I contact the control tower only to
know and double-check the name of the point of departure or of arrival
(for entries in the logbook of my virtual air travels I keep up to
date).Otherwise,I pay no attention whatsoever to air traffic control
procedures. So,I am completely on my own as far as navigation is
concerned.By night,I rely entirely on the instrument panel of the
plane and on the indications provided by my second computer with the
1998 Encarta, its maps and its GPS.By day,I rely mostly on the
above, but also on sight and on my knowledge of geography and memory of
previous trips over the same areas.Over certain areas which I know
very well like, say,Europe,I can determine by mere fluke the
approximate direction of the city of destination.I then simply make
minor corrections of course shortly after take off.
