Is the Operon 248 with 2200 MHz slower than a AMD64 with 3500+ MHz?
The Opty will be alot better, as the AMD64 3500+ is running @ 2.2GHz.
I do NOT know the opty's so good so I am not sure if it is a good gaming chip.
I am sure someone will inlighten us if the opty is better for gaming than the AMD64 3500+, I am sure it is.
Same clock speed, but god look at the Opteron 148 unless you are getting a 2 CPU Socket board. Or look at the Opteron 175 if you are after a 2.2 GHz dual-core Opteron, Socket 939 varient, for a board with only 1 x 939 pin CPU Socket
The Opteron 148/248 have twice the L2 cache of the Athlon 64 3500+ aswell, which will give them a slight edge in some applications.
You won't notice any difference between the two in gaming, unless you are running 2 x Opteron 248 on one board, which is what the 200 series was made for.
The more people that bookmark those three links the better btw, I am getting sick of answering the same question every other day, just do a search.
TabrisDarkPeace is right, with the Opteron sets, you need to make sure your talking about the 939 pin 1xx series. The only Opteron 1xx series that are 939 pin and dual core are 165, 170, 175, and 180. All other 1xx series are single cores.
The 2xx series have 940 pins and have to use ecc ram. The mainboards are more expensive, but have some great options on them, esp. if you get a dual chip board. They can have upto 8 gigs of ram and between 8 and 16 Sata connections on them depending on the manufacturer.
3500/3700 are the best price ratio... some would say a 3200... processor isnt a bottleneck, video cards are... after a certain point processor speed doesnt make a difference in fps... id say get the 3700+, its the only one besides the 4000+ with 1mb cache, the 3700 is just as fast as a 3800 and cheaper i believe, but barely. 3700 IMO is the best price/performance ratio (i have 1 there fast) good luck with ur build... also stay away from socket 940, there server grade chips/processors and not really meant for gaming...
opterons are good price/perforamnce if u want to overclock, i dont think hed be a good candidate for overclocking, he may burn out his new cpu... im recommending 3500/3700.
parlee, your exactly right man. I would also recommend a 3500 or 3700. Your gaming so dual core shouldn't be that much to you. If you are going to be using the machine for anything else, then i would recommend a dual core 3800+. i'd leave the opties alone.
