I've been thinking of building a new system over a 4-6 month period, with a total spend in the region of £3000 (around $4-5k i believe), and was thinking about buying the new an AMD chip for the new AM2 socket processor.
I'll be building the system to run Vista (thus the high price tag!), and so will begin the build around October...

But... As we all know, AMD will be releasing their Rev.G cores in the 1Q07, and i do not want my motherboard, ram, and processor, to all become obeselete at the same time!

So.... Does anyone know of the socket AMD plans to use for the Rev.G cores? And Also, what ram it will use?
I just Really dont fancy spending alot on an AM2 system for it to become obselete when the 65nm Rev.G cpu's appear in 1H07 !!!

Any thoughts ?

Lets leave the fanboyism at the proverbial door on this one...

Isn't DDR4 right on the corner after DDR3 be released? Maybe everybody should wait for that.

Nah, AMD wouldnt "jump ahead", of any memory technology Intel used, simply because none of the memory manafacturers would produce them in enough volume to be viable for a mainstream consumer...

point taken... btw, Pat was being sarcastic

This is a Catch 22. We've all gone thru at some time or another. IMO, if in Oct, you build an AM2 system and spend the money on quality mid to high end components at the time, then you'll be able to enjoy at least 12-18 (hopefully longer!) months without feeling the rig is "obsolete".

Look at it this way, I'm still using an AGP gpu (BFG 6800GT OC). Is it outdated? Yes. Is it obsolete? Meh, not really. Does it let me turn on all the eye candy? Not really. Does it play CoD2 at 1280x1024 smoothly on my 19"LCD? Smooth enough for me to run and gun while defending Hill 400!!!!

So, with that said, you can only purchase the best components available at the time for the best price you afford. No matter what, whatever you get will be "obsolete" as soon as the next big thing hits the market.

Good luck!

very good point! I think, from what i've heard, i'll wait until the Rev.G cores come along, hoping that the socket will stay the same for a little longer than 6months ! Cheers guys !
