How long will this last?

Too broad of a question.

Will it still be running 2 years from now? Yes, assuming you take care of it.

Will it still be running the best games 2 years from now? Yes, but probably not extremely well.

As long as you can handle not running games 1 yr+ from now at complete max settings perfectly...as in settle for medium to high with decent frames, then I think your good to go go and would worry about it bro!

From a gaming POV of coarse!

Best,

max resolution is not important to me I just want it to run fast and look OK. I dont see computer games getting that much more heavy duty. I mean how could they get much better than oblivion. As I speak though they are probably coming out with a game better than oblivion lol

Hardware moves too fast to be bleeding edge for two years. Its like dary products except it dosn't last as long.

having said that you ought to be fine for 95% of what out there even in 2 years. Just don't expect c2008 games to run an max frame rate.

I would like to wait 2 years without doing any MAJOR upgrades.

Yeah, this is quite vague. Is this a statement or a question?

As a response to a statement:.......um..ok, don't do any upgrades....

As a question as to whether or not the system would be useful: depends on the apps, depends on the user. Of course, I still like Starcraft, so what do I know?

Wait a few months for AM2/Conroe to come out. Check out which one has the best price/performance ratio, and then make your choices THEN, because if you make a pc then, it would last a hell of a lot longer than a socket 939 pc.

or wait even longer... A few months after conroe, because THAT pc, will last even longer...

Im buying a new PC today, cuz i need a new one today. Sure, I've thought about Conroe, but it sucks me into that wait game, and I hate that game. So im going to be happy now.

That's right, you know it can't be static. That would lead to death!

I a very similar setup, I expect to get two years out of it, you should expect to get at least two good years out of that in most aspects.

I have:
X2 4400+ @ 2.4GHz
2GB GSkill DDR RAM
MSI K8N Diamond Plus
EVGA 7800GT CO SE => Stepping up to => EVGA 7900GT Superclock

I might add another EVGA 7900GT Superclock in SLi down the line later, or just change to another better videocard later when games get even more advanced.

I think that I will prolly get this and just keep upgrading the video card when games get more intense. Games mostly rely on video cards and I think the opty will last a while so will 2gb ram. well hopefully

Oh ok, thats good.
Why do they keep saying Q1 of 2007 or late 2006? Which one is it?

AM2 is going to launch June 6, 2006 (6-6-6) with chips shipping to mobo makers next month. As for late 2006 or Q1 of 2007, you are refering to launch times for quad-core. And the beat goes on...

You will probably be fine, maybe with a few minor upgrades for the next 4 years. Ram for your pc should be cheap by the time you need 2 more gigs, and so should a faster video card. Unless you have cash falling out of your pockets, don't sweat it. The bleeding part of "bleeding edge" is your wallet.
Bear in mind that I'm a cheap old bastard.
