Playing a tape recorded on a different camera

I have a friend with a Cannon Digital Video Camera, she recorded an event that I wanted to download on to a PC but she doesn't have any cables. So I took the tape and put it in my brother in laws JVC since he does have cables but it wouldn't play. I know the type of tape works in that camera but does it have to be recorded on a camera made by the same manufacturer?

If it is digital 8 there are difrent formats and settings.
If it is mini dv check if it was recorded in lp mode there should be a little switch on the casette. I say that because some cameras dont support the lp mode.
