Which would overclock to a higher frequency? X2 4400 or 4800

Hey There,

I am going to be buying either a AMD X2 4400 or a 4800. I am defintely going to be over-clocking it in a water-cooled computer.

Someone told me they are the exact same, except the manufacturer, sets the multiplier lower or something...

So, I should be able to over-clock them to the same speed. Is this person wrong?

4400 = 2.2 ghz
4800 = 2.4 ghz

Lets say, I overclock a 4400, and a 4800. Which one will be able to go higher?

If they both were running at 2.8 ghz, would the 4800 be more stable? If so, then I will probably buy the 4800 so that I can overclock it higher, than a 4400 would go. If this isn't the case, then I'll just save the money and get a 4400. Thanks

I'd expet either/both to top out at between 2.6 and 2.8GHz (perhaps 1 out of 10 might make 2.9-3G with good ooling), and would not bet one dollar on the 4800+ being able to OC any higher than the 4400+...

But if shooting for an OC, I'd look hard at the Opty 170 or 175....; the general consensus is that an Opty, on average, will make it about 100-200 Mhz higher on stock cooling...

With water, 2.8-3G may be possible...

(water cooling rarely gets but 20-50 Mhz higher than quality air cooling in many cases anyway)

The 4400 has a multiplier of 11 and the 4800 has a multiplier of 12. It only takes a 19Mhz (219 x 11 = 2409Mhz) bump to get the 4400 to run at 4800 speeds.

Anyhow, like mdd1963 said, both CPU's will oc about the same.

My 4400+ is OCed from 2.2 to 2.5 pretty easily on air with no drastic heat problems (gained a few ºC) and its as stable as it was at 2.2.

The 4400 and 4800 will overclock about the same. Don't consider the 4800. The opteron 170 is the best bang for the buck and a better overclocker then either of them; For less than $400. Consider it over all the hype over the x2. Get the 170 over the 165, trust me.

Any one of those processors are good but when over clocking please don't forget about the ram. Since the multiplier is set you can only OC by changing the frequency which means you will affect the ram, get good ram that is rated for OC'ing. DDR500 is a good choice.
