Hi guys/girls,

I am considering blowing a few bucks on upgrading my current system (see below), if I had a US$750 (ish) budget and DID NOT want to (can't be arsed to) change the mobo what would you guys recommend. I know AGP is dead (or at least in terminal decline)...but I am considering getting a top spec system ($5000) in two years time, so I just need to extend the life. I would like to reiterate I am too lazy to change the mobo so no PCIe answers please!

For info I am an avid gamer, HL2, Doom III and hopefully the upcomming (Return to) Return to Calstle Wolfy!

AMD Athlon 64 FX-53, Socket 939
ASUSTeK A8V Deluxe Mobo (AGP graphics)
RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition 256MB (AGP)
4 x 512MB DDR PC3200 (333 Hz)
XP Home Edition (fully patched)

Hmm....Either a 7800GS, 6800GS, or x850XT.

Your CPU is great, don't worry with that.

Change RAM to 2 1GB sticks of PC3200 and lose the 4 512MB sticks.

Get XP Pro! -.-

Gainward 7800GS AGP, make sure you get the Gainward, it is a bridged 7800 GT ~$300

I agree with Mike, drop the 4 sticks and get 2 1 gig sticks. Definately get XP Pro.

I don't know about the 6800GS or X850XT, those wouldnt really be that big of upgrades over a X800XT PE.

Thanks for comments so far...

I have read there will be no real performance gains from Win XP Pro x64 as no games take advantage of this as yet...in fact there could be performance hits due to less than wonderful driver support for XP 64?

Your thoughts?
