Ok i have a new setup / new install and its giving me problems. Origionally nothing was installed aside from the video card, no sound card. I installed the mobo drivers, ran windows update ( legit copy of xp pro) installed ati's 6.3 drivers and it started crashing.

msi k8n neo4 platinum
amd 3700+ athlon 64
sapphire x1800xt
ocz 2gb ( 2 1gb )
antec sonata 2
wd 320gb sata2
sb audigy 2 zs

I have the dmp file but i dont know what to do with it. I turned off auto restart and it still restarts neway. It says the error is a hardware failure but im not sure what to do. I did another complete fresh install and there was no change.

It would origionally crash only when i had the video card drivers installed. i called ati and they figured it was a bad card so i RMA'ed the card and well nothing changed.

Im in tryng to run memtest86 but it wont boot from the cd. I changed the bios to boot from the cd first, i have the right file on the cd i think. Boot from cd comes up then nothing happens???

Here is the error in the event log. Error code 0000009c, parameter1 00000004, parameter 2 80545ff0, parameter 3 f2000010, parameter 400010c0f

I have different ram that i can try. I dont think its the powersourcebut i can try my old one it might work ?( antec true power 430w ) ?

sorry for the long post but im frustrated and confused at the same time.

From another board:

0x0000009C: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

This is a hardware issue: an unrecoverable hardware error has occurred. The parameters have different meanings depending on what type of CPU you have but, while diagnostic, rarely lead to a clear solution. Most commonly it results from overheating, from failed hardware (RAM, CPU, hardware bus, power supply, etc.), or from pushing hardware beyond its capabilities (e.g., overclocking a CPU).

As you can see from the above, you have a hardware failure of some kind. This could be any hardware.

So.. check for heat problems in BIOS.

Here is the complete error code

error, 1/1/2004 ( date's wrong /shrug i set it ), 12:41 ,system error, category 102, event 1003 User n/a

Error code 0000009c, parameter1 00000004, parameter 2 80545ff0, parameter 3 f2000010, parameter 400010c0f

0040: 3030202c 30303030 202c3130 34353038
0050: 33303833

It shouldnt be heat. cpu is 20 to 25 degrees C ( artic freezer 64 pro) x1800xt gpu is 29 to 33 degrees C. I havent messed with the bios.

So its boiling down to mobo/ram/ps i guess since im on the second video card and no change. ( unless i have two bad x1800xt's )

i have other ram to put inplace of the ocz so i guess i will try that.

If that doesnt work then the mobo is garbage??

If you set the date in BIOS and it won't keep, you should start there. If those settings won't hold, (you hadn't mentioned others changing) try a new battery even if the board is new, then take it from there.

i can get into safe mode but it still crashes just before windows comes up and sometimes after its up. ATM its not crashing, but it does it randomly, sometimes it has fits i guess and will crash about 4 or 5 times in a row and then be fine for a while.

I will try the different ram and see what happens. I know for sure that if i install something new its not happy and starts to crash. I have a dvd burner that still has to go in / install the nero software and i know its gonna crash after that.

i had the same board and the same similair problems. is your ram 4 512 sticks or 2 1gb? it seems this board does not like having all 4 slots full. check in your bios and set all your ram timings manually as that was also the problem for mine as well. if the ram timings don't work and you are using 2 dimms, i seem to remember that the slots that were populated were strange as well i cant remember as i have since switched to a dfi board. but try running it with 2 sticks and move around the dimms to different slots, sorry i can not tremeber witch ones but i found it on a different forum by googling it and it fixed my problem. good luck!
p.s, even though i ran memtest it found no errors but i would get bsods all the time when i started an app.

well i tried to set the date in the bios. I dont know if im the idiot or the bios is.
It wont let me change the date, i hit enter to change the field and it skips to the next field. ( hit enter on the day it skips to the month, or hit enter on the hours it skips to minutes.) wtf ?????

Thanks for the tip on the ram. I noticed its timing is 2.5 not the listed timing from OCZ. other than that i didnt see anything else. I have two 1gb sticks and im gonna try putting the new ram in first then try moving it around. I have it in slots 1,2 one purple one green.

is the enter key the right button? i dont think so, i think it is too switch to the next option.
read the map on the right side of the bios, usually when it is highlighted, you push pageup/down or some other combo to change values.

Try rewriting the bios and do not use corecenter it F's your bios. If you rewrite do a full one from floppy. I've had trouble with msi corecenter.
Have you tried updating bios or downgrading? Msi.com has a forum with answers to alot of bios and compatibility issues. just type in your board and hardware see what comes up.
Do you have a diffrent vid card you can test with a pci would be best.

Did it crash with the sound card (sb audigy 2 zs) in or out of the computer? Just that I heard of some conflicts with some sound cards and some motherboards. Only a different suggestion to try.

I origionally had the onboard sound running and it crashed. I added the sound card after i got the second x1800xt and it still crashed with the same exact error. So i dont think it made a difference.

Now i just literally unhooked everything from the mobo aside from the cpu/fan. I double checked all the connections and everything was fine i also switched the ram from slots 1,2 ( green, purple) to 1,3 ( green, green) now there was a snippet that i shouldnt do that or something about something in the manual. /shrug

I figured out how to reset the time/date in the bios and for now its right so im not sure how it was different.

So all i have left to do is reinstall the bios which i dunno how to do but im gonna post on the msi forums.

From the manual

always insert the memory modules in the green slots first, and it is strongly recomended not to insert the memory modules into the purple slots while the green slots are left empty.

the sonata 2 has an antec 450w ps. From what ive heard its pretty good.
In all the mess i disconnected my useless 3.5 floppy, and one of my optical drives. So i dont think its the ps.

I dont know if its fixed or not but since i messed with the placement of the ram and all the connections on the mobo were checked one by one its not crashed since. But its done this in the past ( not crashed for a day).
