I've found some interesting news about what Samsung is working on. It's a silent flash-chip drive to replace hard disk.

see link>>> http://www.physorg.com/news11993.html

I was told that flash memory was not suitable as a big storage device as of it's durability but I think Samsung knows what they are working on.

This could be a very nice breaktrough. :)

Flash memory is very durable; much more so than a hard drive, which is why it's great for laptops. It's also very fast. It's expensive now, but in 10 years, everyone will use them, and they'll be dirt cheap.

Well, offcourse it will be great for labtops as it will be power saving. But as labtops are very common in a way compared to desktops when it comes to storage I dont think it will only be suitable for labtops/mobile devices only. I think it will be a great replacement for the Harddisk all the way. Power saving and no more hdd crashes and offcourse a faster way of data flow.

flash drives now are 150 for 2 gb :p just think, last year it was a similar price for a 1gb/512 depending on brand... soon theyll be 10gb for 150! w00t!

129 for a 4 gb! thats even better :) maybe by next year well see 10gb for that price? thatd be more reasonable... make a lil 2.5 platter thing that holes a bunch of those and "raids" them together into 1 giant disk... or maybe just make a 300gb one

The biggest advantage Flash has over current HDD's is that its electronic storage, and not reliant on mechanical parts. This means that its less susceptible to damage from falls, and that's a great bonus for laptops, along with less power consumption. From what I know, Flash drives tend to have a limit to how many times they can re-written, but I think with the necessary error-correction, that can be overcome. Overall, flash is definitely the way forward.

I think it's better not to speculate about prices yet till it really becomes clear when it's released. I think it's a very good step forward in replacing the hdd not only for laptops but also for the desktops. As bluefinger just mentioned......it will be a great replacement for mechanical parts. Think about it. No more chance of hdd crashes and a increasement in performance. I think this kind of development is the way to go. It's time to get some refreshment in technoligy when it comes to data storage. :)
