Stumped by poor performance

I am really stumped (or let down  ). I have a system that (at least from the reviews that I've read) should be able to run Doom 3 RoE at 1024x768 Ultra with a smooth framerate. I can't enter a door or run into a zombie without it getting choppy. The oddest thing that I've run into is, while playing around with the quality settings. I turned it up from 1024x768 Ultra to 1280x1024 Ultra and it improved significantly (not to an acceptable level though). I have re-loaded the OS (fully patched), all the latest drivers, reinstalled the game and nothing else and it still performs the same. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the specs:

IDK man...it looks good to me. And Doom is a total Nvidia friend. That 6800 Ultra should be one of the best cards to run it on. Your processor is good enough, the GPU is great....RAM 1 GB works great. The only thing i could think of is maybe RAM. When did you get the computer? What kind is it? Did you built it or buy it? If all hell goes, reformat the computer, reinstall your GPU drivers and everything and it should be a brand new PC. Sometimes virus's or spyware can just kill every single thing you do, and you don't notice it while idle because you don't need that much computing power to do anything, but while playing games it'd be obvious based on the fact that you know you're not getting the performance you should be getting.

OK , The Problem Is Simple , You Cant Use Ultra Quality In Doom3 ( Specialy RoE) While Your Graphic Card Has Less Than 512Mb Ram , Try Use High Quality Insted Of Ultra Qualty , & You Should Be Able To Play It At Least in 1024x768 + 4xAA , If It Doesnt Help , Try To Install A Fresh Windows XP With Lastest Driver ! But I Think Your Problem Is Ultra Quality ( My Brother Had The Same Problem With Radeon 9800Pro 256Mb...)

Good call PX7800GT...

I completely remember reading about "Ultra" quaility in an article a long time ago. I looked into the test systems used for benchmarking and the test configuration they used for reviewing. Sure enough, not using "ultra quality" for the cards reviewed but "high quality". That really sucks! (for me that is). I totally should have though of that. Anyway thanks for posting, I appreciate it.

FYI

I can run the game at 8xAF 8xAA 1600x1200 res with a smooth framerate.
