So I had a Radeon x850 256mb video card, but upgraded to the x1600 512mb however it seems that my FPS have decreased since installing the new card. Whats up? Would it be better to just go back to the old card, or there is something i have done wrong?

doesnt the 1600 have like 8 or 12 pipelines, where as the x850 has 16 pipelines, also the 850 is clocked higher as well... the 512 memory does nothing compared to 256 on that card because it cant handle anything that uses that much video memory, get the x850 back its much better. the only thing the x1600 has going for it is sm3.0, which it cant really use because its not powerful enough

I agree with prozac26, use the X850.

prozac26, just for interest sake, when does the X1600pro become a better deal, which range of cards?

As long as you can get a X850XT for like $160US, X1600 will never be a good deal.[/quote]

You´re kidding me? $160US for that card. Man, that is even more cheaper than I ever dreamed of. In sweden it is impossible to get that card under $300US for agp and $260US for pci-e. If I lived in US I could have top-notch card all the time

the only reason you'd ever want the x1600 is because it has more support for HDR than most of the x850's do, but other than that the x850 is waaaay better.

Agreed the X1600 may support HDR but it lacks the horsepower to back it up.
I'd rather have a good, powerful card over some features. X1600 can't handle HDR in today's games, so the X850XT owns the X1600.

Both of you are forgeting Oblivion where the X1600Pro does very well and can handle HDR rather well (far less penalty on the ATi 1K series than GF6 & 7), and it's far more clean than HDR in FartCry and such and the penalty is minor. The friend who now has my editing rig with an X1600Pro in it can run Oblivion @ 1024x768 with HDR and 2XAA.

But for most oher apps I'd agree, the X850XT is the better choice in 99% of the games out there, Oblivion is the absolutely only exception out there, and some of that may be memory improvements since supposedly Oblivion has no oclussion culling and renders everything seen or unseen, just like Morrowind did.
