I could post this in the hardware forum.. but they're a nerdy bunch. :)

Ok.. here's what I'm in the process of putting together...

AMD 64 Winchester 3000.. still checking out deals.
MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. Nforce3
2-1GB DDR400 Dual channel memory (Crucial)
2 SATA WD 80GB 7200RPM
Diskmake 600W PSU (Ok, I thought the same thing, but this was the first PSU recommended by a XFX and MSI when questioned)
MSI 6600GT 128 (not really needing the 256)

Give me your worst.. All in All, it's running on par of under 700 dollars at 691 for everything going on current prices I can catch on the web.

I'm figuring this will work for BF2 and give me the chance to mess around with 64bit stuff when it really comes around.

If you can swing the extra, go for the 256MB version of the 6600. You may not need the extra "NOW", but it will be nice for any future games, especially BF2.

Systems Running F@H:
AMD: [A64 3200+] [XP2800+ x2]
Intel: [P4 3.0] [P4 2.8 x4] [P4 2.0] [P4 1.8] [P4 1.7] [P4 1.6 x2] [P4 1.4M] [Xeon 1.0] [Cel 1.0] [P3 ??] [P3 500]

By the time games will need 256 MB VRAM, his GeForce 6600GT will become obsolete.

I think I disagree with the rebundant bunch. I assume that Doom3 plays well on a 6600GT? And Doom3 does make good use of 256Mb.

Taking the liberty of adding to the original question, what is the opinion of the group with regard to a 6800GT? I don't know if it is even available with 128Mb (don't think so) but actually I would like to have your opinion whether the 256Mb is actually being used? I tjink it is, but if you guys agree then I don't understand the point with the 6600GT.

I was looking at the 256mb. But I figure I might as well take the swing and go up to a better video card.

I generally take a look at the dollar amount.. for 30 dollars I can go better.. but when that jump goes to 100 dollars, that's where I stop knowing that it's a newer card in higher demand.

Considering I purchased my motherboard for 65 dollars including shipping, my power supply for an amazing 33 dollars, down 2/3rds of standard price, and my case was only 35 dollars, pricing cut in half. I'm on par to build the above computer for under 600 dollars.
I can probably swing higher.. but with video cards lately, it seems that every week a new and improved version is out.
As soon as I buy, it'll be way too old.

I bought my ti4200 when the ti4600 came out. 3 months later there were 10 new card versions out... someone needs to pace the hardware industry to stop putting out so many cards for the money.. 1 card every 6 months is good.
