Im wondering if its worth my 550 duckets to plurge on the new 7900 gtx over my prior card? I wanted to sli my current setup. but it seems that the new cards are just damn faster and i dont need sli..WTF did i buy a sli board in the first place...

What Are You Doing With Your PC Man ? GeForce 7800GTX Can Easily Play Anything Very Nice & You Have A Very Very Nice CPU , So You Want My Suggestion , I Say Save Your Money For Something Much Bigger , Something With Full DirectX10 Support ... Trust Me , In Next Few Month The New Generation Card ( ATI R6XX & GeForce 8 ) Will Be Out & They Kick The 7900GTX ...

We aren't your judge of finances but honestly a 7800GTX is plenty of horsepower. I have 2 of them... and I see no need ot chnage to a 7900GTX. If anything at least wait till the 8xxx series hit in the summer. (i think they are still on track for summer release)

If you really want to see a difference in performance, I can give you my X600 as long as you give me your GTXs. I never said mine was better; just that you'd see a difference in performance :p

just want everything maxed out in Fps shooters..FEAR COD2 and the new unreal 2007
You Should Be Able To Play F.E.A.R. & COD 2 In MAX Atleast in 1024x768+2XAA Or Maybe 4XAA , If You Really Want Something To Handle F.E.A.R. in 1600x1200+4XAA Over 60 Frame , You Should Wait ...

You will have to wait until the mid 2007 until Vista comes out. not to mention sm 4.0, it will still be a while until dx 10 is released so my quess spend until you cant. It is not a big investment to upgrade to a 7900gtx cuz there is little performance gain between those 2 cards unless you plan on runing it on SLI, then you might notice a difference in gaming but until then, keep what you got, for now.

It's a big difference in performance; do you want it?

how long have you had your 7800? if your under 90 days jump in the step up program for it. I planned my build around the supposed release date of the 7900. I bought my 7800gtx acs3 in Jan for $460 and now my 7900 gtx egs is on its way for only $50 more. Im not to worried about G80 because I dont plan to jump on vista the day it drops anyway. Its funny how everybody is so excited for Vista/DX10 and its aero glass interface, which im sure they will disable after a week to get more performance. :D

Guys,
I happen to have both cards here... The XFX 7900 GTX and the XFX 7800 GTX (two of the 7800's) The 7900 GTX outscores my SLI 7800 GTX in AM3, 11,523 to 11,225 and 11,523 compared to 9200 on a single 7800 GTX.
The 7900 GTX is ALOT more card than the 7800 GTX. Only issue is I can not OC my CPU with the 7900 GTX whereas with the 7800 GTX I can run my 4000 chip @ 2.7 no problem...
Considering Vista is already delayed until 07, I am not going to hold off on H/W now. A year is a LONG time in technology terms, why not enjoy the best now? If you are not doing any OC with your CPU I say go to the 7900GTX. Like I said, it is a much stronger card even though I still LOVE my 7800 cards...
My .02,
-Paul

7800GTX = CPU OC and 7900GTX = No CPU OC..... now thats f*cked up man. That is possibly one of the wierdest things I have heard in awhile, besdies sound cards not likeing SLI (wth is that about anyway?).

I cannot think of a reason why 1 generation would allow a CPU oc and another won't. I am not calling you a liar, I am just very confused.

You can call me whatever you like LOL, I have been called much worse. I am as blown away by this as everyone else, it is one of the weirdest things I have seen in a long time... Funny thing is another guy on the Flightsim forums is reporting the EXACT same thing. Both of us tried the OC'd version of the 7900 GTX opposed to the stock speeds and I have heard even the minimla OC from the factory can make these cards very unstable. You are right, it is weird Here is his post:

Just a real quick update......

Things are not going as smoothly as I had hoped.
The 7900 doesn't seem to like my CPU overclock. I was getting random lines flashing through the video when running FS9 as well as some lockups. When the system locks up, I get a weird overlay effect with all my desktop icons on top of FS9. I went back to stock CPU/RAM settigs and all is OK. Strange why that would happen as the PCI freq is locked at 100 regardless of the CPU OC. So I've got some work to do in figuring out why things don't play nice together when I OC the CPU.

The only benchmark I've run so far is Aquamark3. I ran it just after installing the 7900 and with the CPU OCd. I got a score of 96,368. Also, my "standard" 10 minute FS9 flight showed an average frame rate of 76 which is about 12 FPS higher than with the 7800. But all of this is very preliminary and with stock video drivers and little to no tweaking.

One other thing - for some reason my CPU and MB temperatures are at least 5 degrees cooler than with the 7800. Could it be that the 7900's heatpipe/fan assembly provides better air circulation? Or maybe its because the 7900's G71 GPU runs cooler than the 7800's G70 so there's less heat being generated within the case. Anyway, that is a good thing.

Stay tuned.

...Noell

Like I said, I can Prime 95 for hours with my 7800's and OC, can Prime 95 for hours with a 7900/7800 and no OC and can not Prime for 10 minutes with the 7900/7800 and same OC as dual 7800's. I am as confused as everyone. I have an FX-57 being delivered ASAP to see if I can run a stock 2.8 without issues and if it is really the OC or something on my board that does not like the combination.... Both of us are also running the 4000 chip and the Asus A8NSLI-P mobos with 3500LL memory.

This is Flippin weird,
-Paul

I don't havce the specs on the 600 watt Strider. My Liberty 620 would not run a 7900TX - it had two 22A rails. But a single rail OCZ Mod with one 28A rail would run it. So buyer beware - the new cards are current hungry.

84.25 V2 LOL... That is GREAT to know. I can easily try a different driver version before the FX gets here and see if it clears things up and I can go back to my OC.

A new twist LOL...
Thanks,

Seeing as my new mobo is due here today and I have 2 7900 GTXs, it is good to know that its a driver problem not a hardware. That would totaly suck if I couldn't keep my CPU OC, cause man the Venice really shines at 2750+ :)

Maybe I will stick to the earlier nvidia drivers :D
