Counter-Strike 1.6 problem with video card-monitor

I have an Nvidia geforce mx 440 with agp8x, and a westinghouse 17 inch flat panel monitor. When I try to run CS 1.6 in any modes other than software, my screen turns black, and it says that my monitor is out of range... What is the problem here?
