Long Haul flying

Hi All,

Recently been doing a lot of short haul flights, to get practice with
landings and general ifr flights. I'd like to start doing some long haul
flights with the 747 or 340, but rather than sit it my PC real-time for over
6/7 hours, like to let the sim take over for teh majority of the flight and
i complete the last 1 hour.

My questions are, when ever I speed up the sim during an IFR flight, I'm
unable to respond to atc commands quick enough and get cut off quite
quickly, is there a way round this?

Also, I've read about people switching to GPS during there flight, then
simply switching back to IFR when landing is approaching, I've never used
GPS, is it easy to get to grips with? How do I switch to GPS during a
flight?

TIA

Dan

I don't fly the big guys but I've read here that there are several ways
to do this. The one I remember was a utility to pause your flight where
ever you want along the route. Don't know if it will help though.
Someone here can explain better than I.

Hi Dan

Here's a short, six page, site the GPS.
http://www.computerpilot.com/resource/files/samples/sampleArticle552.pdf

If you look up GPS in the learning center you get 38 pages. The first
one lets you know enough to play with it.

(Yes, one way to cheat is: After reaching cruise altitude under ATC
control, just wait for the next hand-off. After acknowledging, simply don't
tune the next controller. Now you're free to speed up the sim and you're
out of contact with ATC. When you're ready to resume, contact ATC again.
The nearest, appropriate center and frequency will be displayed. The
controller may, at times, act a little confused and start giving turn
commands that are not necessary. Just acknowledge and ignore until he gives
the correct heading; the one you're on.)

(When ATC instructs you to resume your own navigation, flip the "NAV/GPS"
switch to GPS, then on the auto-pilot, click the "NAV" selector. The
auto-pilot will fly you to destination listed on your flight plan through
all the weigh-points. You can watch your progress on the GPS screen. When
you are nearing destination, ATC will start giving vectors for your assigned
runway. At this point you need to click the "HDG" selector on the
auto-pilot again and use your heading bug to obey ATC turn commands. BUT,
don't forget to flip the "NAV/GPS" switch back to NAV or you won't be able
to use the ILS landing function of the auto-pilot)..............Let me know
if you need further asistance. Happy flying...........Hank

Dan, there are a few things you can do.

1) Don't contact ATC and take off from your Airport, set the 747's Autopilot
to fly NAV switch the HSI to GPS and then when you are 1 hour away contact
the ATC for and IFR clearance.

2) Contact ATC climb to the altitude and bring up the ATC screen and hit #4
to Cancel IFR. Confirm you're cancelling IFR when asked, then set the 747's
Autopilot to fly NAV switch the HSI to GPS when you are 1 hour away contact
the ATC and re-establish IFR clearance.

Works for me... I used to hate getting asked all the time to switch to this
freq and switch to that freq...

I believe the trick you are trying to remember is actually done with the FS
map. After ATC has given you the "ATC services terminated", you can bring
them back to life by going to the map and moving your aircraft just a tiny
bit.

There is a way of figuring fairly accuratly your course,at least if
you do not fly too far north or south where the indications given by
the plane`s compass are irrelevant.Say,for a flight between the
continental United States and Spain.

There is a stationary product, catalog number 999-5 by the German firm
called Staedtler-Mars,a navigational protractor.I don`t think retail
stationary stores
will have it in stock. You will have to order it,which I had myself to
do.

You apply that navigational protractor to any map found in a good
atlas, orient it according to the true north, and there you will have
your bearing and course,
accurate enough to go take a nap and then effect minor corrections to
your course, based on the GPS,in the last hour of your flight.

If the above navigational protractor is not available,I assume that
any ordinary 360 degree protractor will do.

I have indicated,in previous answers to other threads, how I use the
GPS.The flight simulator gives me at all times my position. At my
side,I have another
computer with the 1998 edition of the Encarta atlas, which has a
similar feature.
I plot my course from point to point, perhaps as they do or used to do
in the navy.About every 5 minutes,I check my position and move my
cursor on the map,
then knowing where I am and where I am heading. After four of five such
moves,
say in the first half hour of a flight,my plane is oriented well
enough towards a final and distant destination for me to leave the
computer run the simulation alone.
