I'm thinking of buying a Panasonic 512 MB SD card for my new h4155 iPaq.
Panasonic claims a data transfer rate of 10MB/sec, and this card got great user
reviews at amazon.com. The price at www.vanns.com is $199.99.
(http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/details/756349673) Yes, it's
rather pricey, considering a standard-speed 512 MB Viking SD card for my
wife's Palm Zire 72 was around $60.00. I plan to put mp3's, Word files, databases,
etc. on this card---mostly data. Any thoughts on whether this card's speed is
worth the extra money? (Yes, I'm a power user).

Thanks!

No. Even video files are read relatively slowly. Where that high speed
card could come in handy is on a digital camera that is rapidly taking
HUGE image files. On a Pocket PC, the only conceivable use for a high
speed card would be massive database read/writes, and even then, I
think your processor would be the bottleneck processing the data. Save
the money.

Ed,

OK, thanks for the input! I just ordered a Viking 512MB SD card from
amazon.com for $63.00. This card will hold more data than I'll ever need.

I want you to print this out and put it in an envelope, and seal it. Write
on the outside, "Open on Oct 19, 2009", and put it some place safe, but
accessible.

No kidding. My 512MB card that I purchased last year is seeming awful
small these days. <G>

That's a great price ... now why would anyone pay $199 for the 512mb. I got
my 256mb card for around $20 a couple of months ago.

Sven,

You're right, of course. I'm sure in time, I'll find a way to fill up the
card. In fact, not too many years ago, I remember replacing the
730mb hard drive on my Pentium 90mhz desktop with a "bigger"
1.5gb drive. And, just recently, I bought a 200gb hard drive for
my newest desktop. "The times, they are a changing".

Was it a one day special? I'm seeing $89.99 for the 1GB SD card after a
$30.00 rebate.

Saw that yesterday. I debated over that deal (I don't really NEED a 1GB
card right now), decided it was too good to pass up, and when I went
back to the site it had changed. Special or mistake? In either case
seems to be history.

Update:

I finally bought a Viking 512MB card from amazon.com. Viking has been
reviewed as being a cut above the rest. Works great in my h4155. One small
thing is that with the card installed (which it will be all the time), I have to wait
3-4 seconds to turn off the PPC right after turning it on, whereas with no card,
I could turn it on and off instantly. Definitely not a big deal. I suppose it has
to do with moving data in and out of ROM. I imagine a high-speed card
wouldn't make a difference in this regard....only in write and read speed?

Interestingly, my wife has the same SD card in her Palm Zire 72, and there's a
delay of a few seconds when opening any application when the card is installed..
This seems to be standard for all Palms. No delay, though, in opening any
programs on my iPaq 4155.

They certainly are. I just got my H2210 and was idly browsing the sd cards.
I was pretty amazed to find a 1gb card the size of two postage stamps for
forty quid or so. I mean - 1gb - like you said, I remember my first desktop
only had a 1.2gb hard drive !
My Ipaq has a faster procesor than my first desktop (P120mhz, 1996). My
mobile phone (P900) has more memory in it than my first computer (ZX
Speccy).

Technology continues to surge forward at a hell of a rate and I am always
pleasantly surprised to hear of such things.

And it's $69.99 now after the $30 rebate. Guess they change the price daily
with -indeed- a constant rebate. Would be better if they kept both the
price and rebate constant till the 28th.
