I'm curious.. I don't. I have an '05 truck. I don't bother locking the doors because if someone wants in the truck, they'll just break the window. I don't keep anything in my truck worth more than the Window itself or worth more than my deductible.

My window is about $250-$300 to repair if broken, plus a half day of my time. The window replacement place is right across from where I work at that.

I ask because two of my coworkers think I'm an idiot for not locking my door. Their argument is "make them work for it if they want to steal it."

If you're going to steal a car, a glass window is not going to stop you. I leave it at that. I've had my previous truck broken into twice for a $100-$150 CD player. I had an alarm, doors locked, and that didn't even work. For one window, I could have replaced 2 CD players.

I think my coworkers are ignorant in this case.

My Nova used to get broken into all the fucking time. You know how hard it is to find replacement glass for one of those suckers?! So I said fuck it, took all valuables out, bolted the sub box to the frame in the hatch and covered all the heads with clear silicone *snicker* also padlocked the top of the sub box closed, BUT, i cut a small slit in the bottom of the hatch and locked it closed through the bottom of the car *snicker some more*

I spent the first 3 weeks watching out the window, just WAITING for some sap to open the door, and try to take my stereo out of there... it was a open invitation, and I'd laugh SO hard when they'd try to take off the bolts and screws, and try to lift that box out of there... but alas, it never happened.

Worse that happened to the car after that was I found some cigarette butts on the floor.

I don't lock my Jeep. It has plastic zippered windows... Plus, I like to take the top off whenever possible...

Don't lock it unless you have a reason. And don't leave high-theft items laying out.

I have maybe $4 in change laying in a little dash thing that isn't easy to see unless you're actually in the truck and looking for it. Other than that, I keep nothing worthwhile.
Jumper cables, a maglite flash light, a couple small items less than $5. Saves me a window if someone wants to look around.

Plus, I'm keeping the stock radio since its a CD player. THe last truck had a cassette. bah.

Well, I can meet you half way. If you don't lock it you're just making it too easy. I wouldn't be concerned about the window or someone stealing the stereo as I'd be more concerned more with someone just stealing the vehicle. Yes, you've got insurance but what a hassle and you know the insurance company will try to screw you worse than Wingding ever could when it comes time to cash in on the policy.

If you don't care if the truck gets stolen, well then by all means don't lock it but you just make it too easy for anybody (i.e. the apprentice car-jacker) to steal it. In a way you're more or less just asking for it. I mean, if you're not even going to try....

That being said, alarms and the like don't do much and a good thief knows how to get around them and people don't pay attention to them these days. The pager ones are ok, but I would advise arming yourself if you plan to investigate once the pager goes off.

A good lady friend of mine told me that a guy who doesn't lock his car door is a guy women are interested in marrying.

WTF! I say!

Nah--she tells me--if a guy is man enough to leave his car unlocked then he is man enough to be the kind of strong bloke that a woman wants in life: someone who works like a trojan (in the traditional sense of the word); someone who is tough and can stand up to thieves and other blokes etc..

I think she's focking bonkers in the head to suggest such logic and from your track record with the ladies, I'm proven right. [/Tomsmart]

Seriously mate, I own a 78 Falcon XD and lock the focker on occasion; not all the time, mind you, but mostly I do, particularly when there's a case of Stella in the back or my fishing and surf gear is in there.

Hmmm sorta reminds me of the great movie A Bronx Tale when Sonny is giving advice to Calogero about women, only a bit in reverse. The quote from IMDB goes:

Quote :

Sonny: Alright, listen to me. You pull up right where she lives, right? Before you get outta the car, you lock both doors. Then, get outta the car, you walk over to her. You bring her over to the car. Dig out the key, put it in the lock and open the door for her. Then you let her get in. Then you close the door. Then you walk around the back of the car and look through the rear window. If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button so that you can get in: dump her.

Calogero 'C' Anello: Just like that?

Sonny: Listen to me, kid. If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button so that you can get in, that means she's a selfish broad and all you're seeing is the tip of the iceberg. You dump her and you dump her fast

LOL, yeah.

Was that the movie that kick started Depp's career?

No, I think the T.V. show 21 Jumpstreet pretty much got him rolling. Nobody really knows him from A Nightmare On Elm Street and his role in Platoon was more bit part than anything. Moviewise I'd have to say Edward Scissorhands was his big break.

Broken windows are a big problem, but breaking a window is, well, breaking.

Most people, even assholes, wouldn't do that - it's too loud and blatantly illegal.

Open doors, however, are an invitation to petty, immature hooligans. I have a friend who woke-up one day to find someone had taken a leak on his seat and stole his CDs (CD-Rs, he's not stupid). You wouldn't break a window to do that.

Well, you are leaving out something significant here, insurance policy. Over here, when I report a break in into my car, some proof is needed that I have taken adequate measures to prevent the break in in the first place. If the insurance company finds out I did not lock my car, they're not gonna pay for any damages. Not sure how thats works at your end, but that's how it is over here.

First, breaking a window is very simple and very quiet if you know how to do it. I once stood at the end of a car and had someone break a window in a demonstration. The only thing I had was a creak and the glass landing on the ground and sprinkling against the side of the car. Required tool? A screw driver.

Yeah, I know someone can take a leak on the seat. That would be the only concern.

I keep nothing of value in my truck. I don't even have CDs, even CDRs in there. I have the stock CD player.

If someone wants to steal it, a window would be the least of anyone's concerns.

Additionally, I live on a corner lot so everyone can see my front door and my truck.

There are plenty of others cars around that would be better targets or have more interesting things in them. In two years of not locking my doors consistently, I've never had a problem. I figure, if you lock your doors, you have something worthwhile in there.

I keep nothing in my truck worth anything over night. Hockey equipment, camping eq, etc, it all comes in once I get back.

As far as someone pissing in there.. I'll take my chances on that one. :)

Insurance: I don't have to show proof. Actually, if something is stolen from inside my truck.. say $500 in camping equipment. Its not my Car Insurance that covers that, its my house insurance which is far cheaper than my truck insurance. Besides, I'd have no way of proving the truck was locked or unlocked as using a slim jim easily unlocks almost any car with a little knowledge and practice.

That was in Switzerland, strangely enough.

Here, the biggest problem is car theft itself.

I'll lock my truck if I have something in it worthwhile and I'm in another store. I buy something, drive somewhere else, I lock it, get what I want, leave.

But when I have nothing in my truck worthwhile, I won't lock it. If I'm in a parking lot and I have $100 of something tucked in the backseat and I'm running into another place, I'll probably lock it since breaking a window in a public parking lot isn't exactly the easiest thing to hide.

I leave my truck unlocked all night, unlocked at work, unlocked when I go to out places, etc. The only time I lock it would be that time I put something in it until I'm able to get back home to take it out - as long as those items might be remotely worth stealing.

I've been told...uh, a center punch (press???, any machinists around to guess the right terminology) works the best. You place it in the lower corner of the window and press it in. I watched a T.V. show on TLC or Disc. that said it was a handy device to leave in the glove box. In the unusual event that you're car ends up underwater with you in it, it can be a lifesaver allowing you to break the window open very quickly.

In the former USSR, Car used to leak for YOU!!

Reply to ara

Yeah but the common way I've seen a lot of people do is similar.

Take a flat head screw driver, insert into the lower corner where glass and frame meet. Pull on the screw driver against the frame until the window cracks. Makes no noise except the the creak and the glass falling out.

Thanks RCPilot, thats exactly what the T.V. show had. It was impressive to see. They just put it in the lower corner and blammo the entire window shattered. Like I said, handy if your car ever ends up underwater as it is faster than rolling your windows down manually and especially handy with electric windows as they probably won't work underwater.

if you have more time, i've heard of covering the entire window in cellotape(spelling?) to stop pieces of glass falling when you break the window, i think the technique was called "silent window breaking" or something... read about it years ago and have never tried it myself FYI.

Yeah, anything that would stick to the glass, even tape or those sticky book covers they use these days.

Not that I plan on breaking into any cars any time soon...

The center punch does just that, without anything on the window......

ya don't lock it because the locks have been jimmyed and the ignition has been punched on the column... fess up now as to the real reason it is not locked! [/not to mention that was your craftmanship]

Nice logic, but flawed in practice. They'll smash the window anyways generally without checking. Happened to me awhile back. They smashed the window and took the stereo. It was unlocked. When in a hurry the just do what
they know best...

The good thieves pop the locks. The shitty thieves break the window.

Somehow I managed to not even mention popping the locks. Its still fast, less noticeable and costs money still.

I'd like to keep thinking people check the door before breaking a window or popping the lock. The light might come on but thats about it.

Cops are corrupt here. They'll do that to. We refer to it as "Throw them to the wolves."

Cops were at the neighbors yesterday. Neighbor girl wanted to file a report that her roomie pushed her. In the end, the cop persuaded her to press charges because he wanted something to do and he said he'd let her get hit a few times.. turn a blind eye. heh.

Back when Katrina hit N.O. I received a phone call from the N.O.'s Fire department. The explains they would normally take the hose over the windows and the force would break the windows... but the glass was bullet resistant.
They asked me how to get through it.. I said, "with an axe?" hahaha "no, that would put us too close to the fire."
I transferred them to our technical department so they could give them the details on it.
